Digital Voice - upgrade to Digital Voice from FTTC

[link to this post]

This is just a heads-up / info :

I am currently on Unlimited Fibre 1, I believe this is aka FTTC.

I received an SMS from ZEN a couple of days ago "we've emailed you about your service migration etc etc".

Yesterday I received an email "we are upgrading your service to Digital Voice etc etc".

Essentially, in around 30 days ZEN will move me (seamlessly I hope) to the "new infrastructure". Apparently I won't need to do anything.

So far so good ...

Interestingly, if I go on the ZEN web site, I am not seeing any options to upgrade to FTTP (FTTP has been available in my area for a while and ZEN used to quote various upgrade options) . Perhaps this will re-appear after my forthcoming "upgrade to Digital Voice" is implemented.

All comments welcome.

OK - so, after some research, there is no FTTP (yet) in KT4. Patience !

I assume (dangerous to assume, I know) that my soon-to-happen "upgrade service to Digital Voice" is SOGEA. Let's see what happens !

Zen, and other large ISPs, will have an automated process which places an order with Openreach for FTTC to SOGEA migration with number port to the Zen digital voice platform. In parallel the automated process will push some digital voice configuration to both their servers and your Fritz!BOX router.

Once the Openreach order completes the broadband service remains unchanged, any PSTN calls are directed to the digital voice platform and onward to the Fritz!BOX phone socket and/or DECT handsets registered to it.

In your premises you just have to unplug any wired phones from the Openreach master socket (or microfilter if the master socket does not have a faceplate with separate DSL and phone sockets) and plug them into the FON socket on the Fritz!BOX (requires the RJ11 plug to BT socket adapter supplied).

Alternatively if you have compatible DECT handsets you can register them directly with the Fritz!BOX and ditch the original DECT base. If you have wired extensions in the premises that wiring will also have to be disconnected from the master socket and connected to the Fritz!BOX, there are various methods - make a search for voice reinjection.

Lastly there can be issues with wired devices such as telehealth, call screening and intruder alarms. If anyone in the premises is reliant on telehealth devices make Zen aware, there is a national action place which most providers have signed up to. For any other devices it will be up to you to contact the vendor or supplier to resolve any issues.

Don't ditch the original DECT base if it's the only one available to charge your DECT handset!
