Wrong DNS Servers

[link to this post]

I saw two clients today who reported no internet connection through their ISP, Orange. In both cases they were being assigned the following IP addresses as DNS servers:
193.36.79.100 & 193.36.79.101
Neither of these responded so no DNS lookup was possible.
Hard wiring the DNS to what always used to be the Orange ones:
195.92.195.94 & 195.92.195.95
restored a working Internet connection.

What do Orange think they are playing at?

Namebench is a great tool for finding the best DNS combination for your connection based on your browser history. http://code.google.com/p/namebench/

Both pairs of DNS are valid for Orange. I think they once said the former pair is for LLU lines and the latter for non-LLU/ BT IPStream; I always use the former.

Very occasionally their DNSs are down, so you could try OpenDNS: 208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220 or best to mix-and-match one of each, as I do, for the best of both worlds.

Does the former pair actually work with non-LLU lines? They didn't yesterday (28/01/10) or the day before on my non-LUU exchange. This is not an occasional brief outage but one lasting well over 24 hours! I know you and I can set things up to use a public domain DNS server but the average computer user won't even figure out what their problem is. This makes business for me because it's my job to get the average computer user out of trouble but it would be better if Orange sorted things out.

Dunno, having only used the former being on LLU. Seems best to use the ones that fit your line.

Had they ever connected OK with this pair of DNSs or were they new customers? If the latter, they must be on non-LLU and need to use the other pair of DNSs.
