CRC/HEC Errors

[link to this post]

Hi -

I'm about 300m from the exchange and (currently) get the full 8Mb. My attenuation down stream is always 6db (never moves) and the SNR Down is around 12db.

My problem is that at certain points of the day - the CRC/HEC Errors go through the roof - sometimes enough to resync. The Atten/SNR during this period is pretty static.

Even during normal times - I get a CRC error every couple of seconds.

I've tried 2 routers (ST546, 2700HGV) - both report the same. (the ST546 seems to hold the line better during noisy periods). I've also tried plugging directly into the master socket (no ring wire) - same issue.

Line is currently on fast path.

I wouldnt care too much about these - but the constant resync'ing eventually pushes my Target SNR to 15 and I end up syncing lower.

Called BT and said I heard noise on the line (which is a half truth, since I only have a wireless phone and that always seems a bit noisy!) - but they could find no fault.

Im on "normal" BB - not ADSL2 or LLU.

Not sure what else to try, any one got any ideas?

Ive got a sky box, but its not connected to the phone line. No exercise bike, and looking at the size of the bloke next door - he hasnt got one either smile

Like I say, I've tried connecting directly to the master socket - i've also tried multiple filters. (Even directly to the master socket with no filter).

thanks for the reply.

It's the test socket inside the master socket you should use to test. On the wall at the back when you take the faceplate off.

Do you use a plug-in extension cable?

Yea - sorry thats exactly what i did. Took the 2 screws out (disconnecting the internal wiring) and hooked up to that.

I physically connected the router to the test socket with no additional cabling....i've tried to rule everything out and im running out of ideas

You mention certain times of the day, are they regular? If so what is being operated at the same time in your house or neighbourhood?

You could try running RouterStats to see if there is a pattern. See http://www.vwlowen.co.uk/internet/files.htm

sounds like you are suffering from a REIN problem, (Random Electrical Impulse Noise), i have seen issues like this caused by central heating systems, security lighting, 12v transformers and even fuse starters in flourescent light strips.... the list is endless, but if you can see a pattern emerging that will help you to resolve the issue... however, if you prove the fault into a neighbours premises, you have no legal right to force them to change their equipment, diplomacy advised. good luck smile
