In reply to a post by Chrysalis:
yeah this is the problem with isps that throttle, they do so excessively.

8mbit down to 256kbit is a very knee jerk throttle.

throttling wouldnt have such a bad rep if throttled speeds were reasonable eg. at least a couple of mbit.

Which is why I liked Entanet's way of doing things (connections only got throttled when the network load demanded it, then only by the amount needed to bring the centrals back from the brink).

of course consumers need to learn you get what you pay for

Hi

Rubbish!......One click (on the right-hand side of their home page, entitled "Unlimited Broadband - The myth becomes reality"), scroll down about 2 inches on the new page.

Yes I hadn't seen that link, I looked for a more direct route to the information and couldn't find it. Although that link is a "Latest news link" so is it there all the time? Maybe it wasn't there when I was looking.

The obvious place to put this throttling information s in the footnote that most people will be checking out.

The footnote is wrong as it says for "upto 8 Meg" "1 - Broadband is described as 'up to' 8Mb because download speeds will vary depending on your telephone line and where you live. The average speed on up to 8Mb broadband is 5-6Mb. BT Wholesale estimates that 78% of customers will get download speeds of 4Mb and above. Download speeds will vary a lot in the first 10 days after connection and will then become more consistent."

There is no mention to throttling the line to 2Meg (at best and often a lot less) that is the biggest barrier meaning it is not ever going to be 8Meg, so unless you use the connection between 12am and 2am (a window of 2 hours out of 24) the maximum speed you can possibly get is 2Meg with PlusNet.

As for following the asterisks and footnotes to find out what I would actually pay after the introductory offer, the information I can't find. I have to start the signup process to find the actual price I pay.

PlusNet should not be marketing their products as "upto 8 Meg" when the maximum download speeds at best are just 2 Meg and at worse a lot less. Their products are "upto 2 Meg", and stating anything else has to be false advertising.

Regards

Phil

Agreed; and the same should apply to all the other rubbish ISPs (AOL, Orange, Talk-Talk, Tiscali, BT, Virgin ADSL, Sky Connect, O2 Access, Eclipse, etc., etc.).

Hard to imagine how Plusnet manage to match the word "Pro" with a product that only has a 15GB usage allowance (8am to midnight).
Most "Pro" users I know, download a lot more than 15GB.
It really should be called "Gamer" or "Fast", not "Pro" (because it clearly isn't).

so my point proven.

If someone is willing to pay plusnet more money they can get a higher performing service.

Pro is still available on plusnet.

There is no throttling at any time on Pro.

Which is why it's no longer available ("Value" and "Unlimited" only, for new signups).

Depends what you call very low, 15GB = approx 45hrs streaming from the likes of TVcatchup. But you don't need Pro to stream tv, Unlimited will stream just as well.
