Even if you *have* to have the router at the end of an extension, you can run an ADSL-only extension from the faceplate, and keep the other stuff on seperate cabling, which should help a bit, but there's no substitute for putting the router at the master and using a faceplate.

I couldn't agree more with that last sentence. I used to have my modem running from an extension in my study, which made things neat and tidy as my master socket is in the living room. I removed the bell wires at the master socket and the connection was OK. However, this week, I changed the face plate on the master socket and attached the router to it. The router now hangs neatly on the wall by the side of the master socket. I then used a pair of homeplugs to carry my broadband connection to my desktop in the study.... this was the best solution for me. Overall speed has increased and since moving the router to the living room, I have found that the wireless signal is now better distributed around the house. I would recommend changing the faceplate over using the i-plate if at all possible.

That's an exact copy of my own setup. Router right by the master, filtered faceplate, and homeplugs. I'm going to put together an extra-short RJ11 cable when I have some spare connectors kicking about, and scrape a few more K of sync.

One thing to note if you use a filtered faceplate is that you do not need to use the iplate as well, as the bell wire is isolated from the ADSL within the filtered plate. The extra connections between all these plates is probably best avoided.

Thursday i'm migrating from aquiss to BT (god forbid me)

These are my line stats (temporarialy using a DG834Gv3 Router)

Noise Margin 7 db 23 db

I have always kind of struggled with Broadband but I can get 2MB as you can see. Would my investment have been worthwhile? I've got my phone line thingy connected via the test socket so I would assume that I would place the I-plate over that? Then reattach the original BT plate?

If you are in the test socket, then stats will not improve by using the I-plate. At 59db downstream attenuation, you are, technically speaking, beyond agreed limited for the current fixed 2 meg product you are using.
I'd be interested to know if BT BB are putting you on a Max product ?

Got no idea what's happening with me. I guess I'll have to wait to thursday and beyond to see what they plan to do (although if they don't feck my line up to only be 1/2 meg capeable within a few weeks like they did the last tie I was with them from a healthy 2MB then that will be a dramatic improvement.!

Some modems hang onto fixed speed mode better than rate adaptive, so given the sparse margin I would be holding my breath
