Resolved line fault - now what ?

[link to this post]

Hi,
I had a lot of problems with noise on my line which I eventually sorted by fitting a filtered faceplate. However my default noise margin has gone sky high. I don't know how high exactly but even with maximum 'tweaking' I can only get it down to 9 db.

I've talked to my ISP about getting the default noise margin reset to 6 db but they say BT are unlikely to co-operate as they don't see a high default noise margin as a fault.

Is there anything else I can do ?

Thanks

Ron

If BTw will not intervene manually as the ISP has said then all you can do is wait.

I think the maximum target is 15dB. The system is supposed to reduce the target by 3dB following 14 days of stability. I don't think you can rely on this 100% on timining or at all but I can confirm that I had a 12dB target reduced to 6dB. I don't know how long that took as by chance my line just managed 8Mbps so I simply set maximum tweak in DMT and left it. A long time later I upgraded the firmware in my 585v6 which wiped out the tweak but by then it wasn't needed.

Cheers for that, I'll wait the 14 days and just keep fingers crossed.

I hope BT's software is smart enough to notice that the noise has gone
even though the problem was in my own property and no fault was reported.

Unless you are really desperate for the speed increase then I wouldn't tweak the Target SNR initially. Connecting at the new lower speed should produce less CRC/HEC errors which in theory will please BT's systems, which could get your automatic decrease to happen quicker...

Hi b4dger,
I've just checked my routerstats and its gives the following ;

Uptime 57:13:33
HEC 1298
CRC 1521
Interleave depth 4

Is this good or bad ?

Cheers

For that 'up time' it doesn't look too bad.

What I was suggesting is that by not tweaking, your line may run 'cleaner' than if you were manually reducing the Target SNR - and this would hopefully mean it would get reduced quicker by the automatic systems as they see the reduction in errors.

Ah got you now ! That makes sense.
Will take the tweak off and see what happens.

Cheers

OK, I took the tweak off and synched at 1024 kbps. Left it alone for 15 days, rebooted the router and no change.

ISP asked BTw to drop the target noise margin and they refused saying there were still errors on the line - 5 to be precise !

Any suggestions as to what to do next ?

Thanks

If like mine your target margin gets stuck at 15dB even after holding sync for weeks at a time, then continue to tweak the margin (e.g. DGteam firmware) but the best you can achieve is a 6dB reduction i.e. 9dB margin

Alternatively move to an LLU provider, or wait for BT to upgrade your exchange to 21CN WBC, both of which give the ISP more control of your target noise margin.

I moved to LLU and I don't regret it.
