Sync Rate Problems

Hi all,

A few weeks ago I started getting problems with my broadband connection. Last weekend I brought the router downstairs and plugged it into the test socket behind the faceplate. It synced at 8128 down and 448 up. It had a bit of a wobble on Wednesday but it been fine since.

Everytime i plug the faceplate back into the test socket my sync rate drops to about 1600 down and 448 up. It's not just once but everytime I plug the faceplate back in I get the drop.

The faceplate has an extension running upstairs to connect the fax and other Sky box so I kinda need it plugged in.

My ISP Zen have been thru various test and I've changed filters etc. Only thing not changed has been the router but if it ok syncing with the test socket I'm guessing it'll be ok in the faceplate.

I've been with Zen since 2006 and previously was with Plusnet for 4 years with very little problems.

Anyone got any ideas what might be causing it?

Have you tried various permutations of fax and sky box connected/disconnected?
Not unknown for devices to develope `faults' where the device appears to function correctly but has an adverse affect on something else connected to it, directly or indirectly. It maybe that the fax and/or sky box are affecting the connection in such a manor.
Hopefully you have both the fax and sky box correctly filtered where the connect to the phone line
Are you using a plug in extension cable or is it hard wired to the faceplate?

Have you removed the 'ring wire' on the extension? You only need to have terminals 2 and 5 connected.

Also FAX and SKY boxes can often be 'trouble' - especially if one should develop a fault - you could also try double-filtering these devices (i.e. use two filters).

Silly question but it has to be asked, is the fax and sky box filtered?

If that is a hardwired extension do as already suggested and remove the ringwire from terminal #3

If it is a plugin extension then put the filter at the master socket end and that will block the interference it is obviously picking up.

Did think it was a silly question at first. I thought I'd disconnected everything when I moved the router downstairs.

Checked this morning and I must have had brain fade when disconnecting everything. I'd plugged the Fax line and Sky line into the extension. Kinda explains the drop in sync

Attached the faceplate and now getting 7744kbps down and 448 up.

Is it possible that the extension is causing the 380kbps drop?

You should become a Sky installer (they have a habit of not bothering with filters, or plugging them into the wrong place).

Easily; my extensions made almost 2Mbps difference!
Have you removed the ring wire (wire #3)?
If so (or it doesn't make any difference), you'll only get that last little bit of extra speed by having an ADSL filtered face-plate on the master, and plugging your router into that.
