Curious mouse/ Windows/ PC issue

[link to this post]

This morning I booted up my desktop (XP SP2) and reached the Windows login screen only to found I had no cursor movement from my Microsoft USB mouse (corded). I rebooted and the same thing happened. I tried a spare mouse and alls well. I assumed the mouse had died but before burying it in the depths of the wheelie bin, I plugged it into a laptop (XP SP2). It worked perfectly. Ive since retried it on my desktop. Its as dead as a dodo..but alive and well on the laptop. Can you make sense of it?

Tried another usb port?.. (you can put in two mice on a computer so you can diagnose whats going on)

Yes. I ought to have mentioned that. I tried the Microsoft mouse in a front-mounted USB port on my desktop. Previously, It had been in a port at the back.

Does the rogue mouse work in safe-mode?

I've just tried your suggestion. The little rat worked in Safe Mode. I reinstalled the driver and rebooted into Normal Mode. The thing is alive-alive-o! Weird stuff!

I confess to being a poor typist but this Labtec keyboard has made me worse.

Heh I can beat that. Sometimes when I boot my desktop the return key doesn't work and I have to use the [Enter] key or unplug/replug it. Always the return key :-/
