Window issue

Ok

first, the other week i updated my msn messenger to messenger live, and afetr doing this found that the system wouldn't let me run the new version. I did the 'repair' option and then it tells me something is worng with the host files. So i thought [censored] it and got meself setup with meebo which is actually a useful tool i am finidng.

Anyway, this week i purchased an update to a game (sins of empire) and to actually downlod the update i need to have internet explorer 7 or higher installed. I dont use internet explorer, sticking with firefox, so i thought no biggie i just up date my ie from 6 to 7 to get the down load required.

Afetr spending hours trying to get this to work i have given up, i have tried everything barring reinstalling windows XP pro, and before i go down that road is anyone able to advise me what i may be missing here or is there a link between the issue i am having with windows live messenger and installation of IE 7

gotta say, i am no computer geek, and followed all the solutions offerred by microsoft, and learnt some new tricks there. I have antivirus kasprsky and comod firewall, use spybot and the system is 'clean' i even ran the microsoft live scan thingy, some issues came up but those were fixed (registry related)

so .. before i lose my marbles and to help me get the software i purchased downloaded any help would be greatly approciated.

undo the immunize on spybot search and destroy, that can cause problems.

Unlock the hosts file too (if you have indeed locked it). - this sounds like what might be causing the problem.

Secondly, try upgrading to IE8: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/

And run all neccesary high-priority windows updates, and get the latest version of the net framework.

Hi Pipexer - sorry it's CatsWhiskers here - are you answering my question too about my Microsoft Word documents loss? If so, what are hosts files and where do I find them? I can't log in to the forums at the minute as my password is at work.

I can't help you with your word document loss I am afraid, I really don't want to advise/suggesting anything as I really don't know anything about data recovery, it might be worth you asking on a forum with better office experience than here.

Reading your thread though - I am a bit unsure of why the data recovery company can't try and restore the parts of the document, sounds dodgy to me, I would try a kind PM to sobernet and see if he may be of any help, he posts a lot around here and he knows what he is doing when it comes to data recovery.

Lastly, is it the natwest file which has caused this? I would consider speaking to natwest about this and informing them of what damage they have done - they could be somewhat responsible for the damage.

After a eventful weekend of toying, doing things suggested, i actually found an issue with alienguise and netframe work.

with the help from a friend (remote access) Removed alienguise and reconfigured netframe work, and things all seem to be working ok now.

i've never even heard of alienguide!

basically, i have a alienware computer (bought BEFORE dell took over) and as part of the software preinstalled was alienguise that is a skin modding tool that enables you to have different themes for your desktop.
