MS Security Essentials Network Issue

[link to this post]

I saw an article the other day saying that MS Security Essentials was the best free AV product about (according to AVComparatives.org).. I currently run Avast, but thought I would try it out..

Uninstalled Avast from my Win7 Professional box and installed the MS software. At the time, I was streaming a radio station but nothing else network related. Install went fine, and a scan started. Then, I tried to access the net using Firefox and nothing.. I couldn't even get the router page to come up.. The streaming radio, however, kept working as if nothing happened so it would seem that existing connections are fine, but new connections failed.

Rebooted the machine and the problem remained. Oddly, I could still access the shared drives on the HomeServer machine (local network)..

Uninstalled the MS stuff and the internet came back to life immediately..

Anyone else seen anything like this??

TIA

Nope, not seen any problems with it all so far, we have it on a testbed PC and a testbed laptop on the benches and they are fine!

I am not sure I understand exactly when it updates, it seems to have a mind of its own when it comes to updating itself, most days I can just click "download" and a new set of definitions come down, if I leave it alone, it seems to go days and will then suddenly burst into life and update itself! I don't know what actually triggers an update ! ! ! Manually, fine, automatically, not quite so sure about it yet !

Regards,
Trevor

I too was running Avast! but got tired of the registration requirements for a free version. Moved all my PC's, friends, family and my clients PC's to Microsoft Security Essentials.

No issues whatsoever to report.

When you have Avast free edition on dozens if not a hundred PC's you'd understand...

If you have hundreds of PCs then presumably you should not be using the Free version?

Avast! Free
This edition is FREE OF CHARGE for non-commercial & home use only. Both of these conditions should be met!

They ARE home users and it's not used commercially. What's the problem?

I run an IT support company and recommend free AV to my clients. I don't sell it to them. However they might call me after a year if it requested "re-registration" for assistance. MSE does away with that issue.
