java problem

u updated java last week i think and now it will not run on websites, such as bt speed test and on here

i have un installed , then reinstalled , checked all settings in my browsers, all ok

so i can not run a bt speed test etc. when it does not run i get a box come up saying "NullPointerException" what does this mean?

Who updated Java? TBB?

What version Java?

Update 33 last update for Version 6
Just installed Version 7 update 5
Works fine in IE9 and latest Firefox
BT Speedtester now works, was freezing before 7 installed
Other sites such as TBB also work
Laptop on Windows 7 64bit Core i3
Strange.
Null Exception is where there is a problem with programming code

(The BT speedtester is an application that suffers from Java 7 stupidity).

The solution for me was to change the default Java7 ip stack.

One way to apply this patch is:
- make sure no Java running
- go to the Java control panel
- Java tab
- View ...
- insert -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true under Runtime Parameters
- close View and java control panel

I'm not sure if this will automatically be undone when you next install another Java. Any suggestions for appropriate semi-permament alternative patches welcom

Updating JAVA can be a problem especially if you are behind a corporate firewall.

Issues with BT SpeedTest site aside you may wish to 'clean up' your JAVA Run Time Environment (JRE).

A well kept secret is JAVA's Offline installer which you can find at

http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Each time you are told that an update is available go to the page above, download and save the Windows Offline installer in a Java Updates folder. Each is named differently so you will soon build up a small library of each version. Then run the update you have just downloaded explicitly.

There is a 'Remove Older Versions' link at the top left of the above page which will take you through these pages:-
