If Christmas lights interfere with someones adsl, is it against the law
Not as far as I know, I don't see how it can be.
ALL electrical equipment must comply with the regulations regarding interference so yes they would be illegal..

Sorry to say but no they are not, they would be if they were generating a massive emf but xmas try lights are not capable of generating such a large field to break the emissions directive, its just a sad fact of adsl and xmas tree lights sorry to say.

Just out of interest, did you consult with your legal department before answering?
John.

That was Matt's opinion on the matter, so I'm not sure why he would need legal advice before posting.

It is great that Matt answered buy I can't see why anyone would expect the question to be answered by any plusnet staff. It is a legal question about xmas lights, it's only link is that if the lights produce em they may effect ADSL.
The issue is about the em interference from lights and their legality, it has nothing to do with plusnet and I can't see why plusnet should speak to lawyers. In this matter plusnet post with no more authority than the rest of us.
As far as whether it is legal I think that has already been answered. If the lights are within the limits set by law then they are legal. If they aren't, then it isn't.
My video sender is affected by next doors microwave but that doesn't make the microwave illegal and the same applies to lights/adsl.

No, don't worry about it. This is just overspill from something in Free Chat. The OP was using Matt's response as an authority on the matter.

What you said is basically what i have been to hit home in freechat . I only asked a plusnet rep , because i thought it would be good to get some insight from an isp. The trouble is some people will not except anything no matter who says it and asking if they consulted their legal team is just plain ridicules .

Hi Dusty,
Matt's offered you a personal opinion.
Our legal team deals with legal issues surrounding the provision of broadband and related services. They are not here to advise on whether or not Christmas Tree provision is violating the law. I'm not sure whather or not you expected Matt to ask them
My personal opinion would be very similar to Matt's. I can't see how home electrical equipment (at low cost) could be taken to court over a small intereference issue. But an interesting argument nonetheless!
NB: I am not legally trained and have no pretences of being so!
NBB: The above was a disclaimer .

All i wanted was an opinion from someone in the business. I just wanted to get some prospective from people in the know.

Thanks Dusty.

Here you go dusty, this may answer some of your(or who ever needs to know) questions.

Interested to read your post re IEC. Some years ago I was actively involved with one of the Telecommunications Committees TL12/C. Wonder if you are familiar with it?
Afraid not, telecoms is something i do not really get involved with. Its normally us doing something that effect telecoms
Thanks StAnLeH,
It was just a thought as you never know a posters potted history.

The obligatory, annual, Christmas Light v ADSL interference thread.
That thread is in freechat, and boy what a thread it is
It is an offence to interfer with any reception etc, and should a person be believed to be radiating interference they should be politly in the first instance be informed, if they do not take immediate action and switch off the source they they may be prosecuted under the relivant Telecoms Act. First you have to find the radiating source.
Your quoting a telecoms act that was made in 1981 or there abouts and has no relevance to adsl . The fact is if Christmas lights interfere with adsl the conclusion is, that its one of those things .
>and should a person be believed to be radiating interference they should be politly in the first instance be informed.
That sounds painful!
Once again people are interpreting a telecoms act that has nothing to do with Christmas lights or adsl and was written before adsl came in to existence.
Dusty, just because the act came into existence before ADSL does not mean that it cannot be applied. Interference is interference, whatever the source. A service is being interfered with therefore the act could be applied.
I don't think the act will specifically mention things like christmas lights etc it will use the word 'equipment' therefore covering almost anything.

You can generalise equipment to mean all most anything to suit this thread and many others. The fact remains it does not relate to the telecoms act at all, no matter how you want it too. Not one person in this country has been taken to court or prosecuted about Christmas lights and adsl. Plus the fact that people in the business say that it can not be enforced and its one of those things. If you can not find one online article saying you can be prosecuted for it, does that tell you something ?

At the end of the day, no-one is going to take forward a seasonal issue like this. It's a short-lived problem and people are not going to pursue it at a time of goodwill to all men and Plusnet.
