Why use wireless to set up router

[link to this post]

I am going to set up my sisters broadband. Check wiring and install the router.
The router is a voyager 2110 in your set up guide it says set up using a wireless device to make the first connection to plusnet using username and password.
Does this mean if i use an ethernet cable instead of a wireless device. that the wireless side of the router would have to be manually enabled.

Bad advice I would say. The router needs to be set up and the wireless connection properly secured, before transmitting usernames and passwords.

I would use ethernet in the first instance.

Hi Barry,

No, it doesn't mean that. It's basically because it's easier to set up the router itself using a wired connection as sometimes your computer isn't able to pick up the wireless connection until the router has actually been configured.

It's just to make it easier for you rather than tearing your hair out first thing

Ensure that you use the wireless connection NOT the Ethernet cable to configure your router.

Odd.

I'd have said things the other way around. Have you got the specific link to where it says that?

as requested http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/hardware/voyager2110.shtml

Its not a big thing James
I just wondered why it specifies using wireless to set up
and of course would i have to manually configure the wireless side if i used an ethernet cable to do the initial set up.

Yep - I think that's a typo on their instructions.

Wired or wireless will do for setting up, but wired is easier in the sense that you don't have to worry about getting a signal or having to enter a key to connect to the router.

Nowadays routers come with wireless enabled (with or without a preset encryption key), so you could configure it from there.

Always worth having the Ethernet cable handy, in case you are locked out for some reason, so you can physically connect to find out what is going on.

Looking at your instructions it seems to me that it makes the assumption that it is a wireless connection required as default. It may assume that perhaps no NIC is fitted but that tends to be rare nowadays.

I think most would agree that a wired connection should be default and the wireless as the option and not as written in your instructions.

Tad confusing so perhaps it should show both options and then suggest that wired is the preferred initial set up option, and the reason why.

Just a tad sad..a wee bit old...
