McAfee Internet Security

I have just received an email from PN offering a deal on adding in McAfee for £2 per month. A while back a review in PCPro did not comment favorably on McAfee.

Anyone got any views? I currently use Norton.

I've used both. Prefer Norton.

McAfee is nothing like what it used to be protection wise. You are better off sticking with Norton or better still - Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security 2012 which is top of the Pc PRO A-List.

I could have it free from Plusnet AFAIK but I choose not to. Happy with Microsoft Security Essentials and other free products such as Malwarebytes as and when required, plus OpenDNS to filter out web nasties.

Why pay when there are free alternatives that are just as good (if not better)?

£2/month = £24/year EXPENSIVE

I am paying £30 to protect 3 machines - but that may not be renewed.

I was about the same for 2 PCs for 2 years (Kaspersky).

I've never used the single-user version, but I used to have the enterprise version for work, and that was a dreadful resource hog.

After the work experience, I deliberately avoided McAfee for my own machine, and got Norton instead.

I've no reason to think McAfee wasn't successful enough at what it does. Neither I personally, nor the company (that I'm aware of) had security incidents that should have been picked up, but weren't.

Then again, I've hardly ever had security incidents at all, really - probably because I'm quite conservative in which websites I visit, and never open or click anything from an untrusted sender. Sometimes not even from a trusted sender, if it doesn't seem like the kind of wording they would use, or purports to be photos of a holiday they'd never mentioned they were going on - that sort of thing.

Not saying security software is redundant. I view it as similar to house insurance, in that it's reckless not to have it, but there are not that many occasions when it really comes into its own. But you only need once, for it to have been worth it.

Not sure £2 p.m. or £24 per year is such a saving. I think I only paid £30 for Norton 360 - but might have been a special offer, at the time. Dunno what the regular price is.

Edit: in the light of the other posts, mine would cover multiple machines too (I'm sure it's at least 3, but it might be six). It's academic that I don't actually have any other machines, but if I got any, they could be added on the same license.

I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole and you can get a much better one cheaper (or free)

I used McAfee some years ago it came as a 12 month freebie with the PC, I didn't like McAfee back then, maybe it's improved now just like Norton has according to some reports.

At the moment I'm using a free to use internet security suite which so far seems OK.

Like others have said better ones about,
but is good at getting rid of neighbours.

Stick to Norton.

If you bank with Barclays they give you Kaspersky (3pc 1yr) for free.

Thanks all for opinions. Looks like I will stay with Norton as it is around £25 for 3 PCs out in the market place. Its strange really but other good ones that are free don't give the same sense of security!!

I feel perfectly happy with free, but appreciate some feel paying money will somehow get them a better product... Doubt the product will be much different, though virus db updates may be allowed more frequently, and having better support may assist some...

Remembering back some 20 years, when Dr Solomon was a widely used product, someone (on being made redundant) decided to get the MD a free 'Virus Calendar', as the MD could feel worried about almost anything... I think there were 5 days without a possible 'attack' on, so the MD, if he did look at it, could have best part of a year in panic
