I'm helping a friend to move from O2 dial-up (she's an elderly lady trying to get up to date) and phone to PlusNet ADSL broadband and phone. I've heard tales of problems when O2 customers having broadband already try to move away to PlusNet. It seems that O2 then tend to cease the line. Would this still apply when there is no broadband on the line already? PlusNet will install the broadband first, several weeks ahead of the phone switch. Will this upset O2?

Until plusnet submit the WLR (phone line) transfer O2 will know nothing about her getting broadband.
So no worries about a cease, unless someone tells O2 they want to cease/cancel their phone line.
She will get a letter from O2 asking to confirm the phone line move

That's very helpful. Thank you. We won't be telling O2 that we want to cease or cancel the phone line! Presumably she will need to phone O2 in response to their letter - probably best not to mention broadband at all, then.

The usual practice is to transfer the phone line then place the broadband order (about 7 - 10 days before it is active) and I don't know if a simultaneous provide is possible under these circumstances.
So it might be worth asking if Plusnet can provide a temporary dial up facility if the O2 dial up stops once the line is transferred. I have no idea whether the dial up is linked to having the phone line with O2 or is independent

PlusNet say that the broadband will be activated in 5-7 working days and then the phone service will be transferred 2-3 weeks later. In which case, if all goes according to plan, there should be an Internet connection throughout.
Still, it's useful to have backup.

Normally 0845 calls to dial up services are not included in the call packages
This includes Plusnet and BT

Excellent news - that is how it should be done

Age is catching up with you Jim. BT, Plusnet and the Post Office include 0845 and 0870 calls to name a few that I have used. That is what I like about forums, you can always pick up some incorrect info!

No it isn't on BT and Plusnet

0845 and 0870 numbers are also included within your inclusive call times (excluding Calling Card and Dial-through access numbers and dial-up internet access).

Oldjim did not say VOICE calls to 0845 numbers
He said DATA calls to 0845 numbers
They are treated differently.
He is correct.
So far as I'm aware any data type dial up call to a 0845 number is charged as a local call regardless of whether these numbers are included in the users call package inclusive or otherwise.
It is indeed interesting what incorrect info people come out with on forums isn't it??????????

Technically it wouldn't be charged the same as a non-inclusive "local" call, it would be at 0845 rates, which can be slightly lower (in the case of BT) or higher (most others) than a geographic call. It also relies on the number being recognised as a data service, it is possible that some 0845 dial-up numbers would not be and you might get away with it being treated as inclusive, but in the case of the one professor973 posted this is very unlikely as it is pretty high profile and would be chargeable.

You are splitting hairs now Jim. You stated simply that 0845 numbers were not included in call packages. The link I provided to free internet stated quite plainly that you just pay for 0845 calls, so dependant on phone supplier I expect. That's the problem with trying to help others, some of us will always be shot down by someone that knows better.

Jim was not splitting hairs. You were, quite simply, wrong. That in itself is not a problem, we all make mistakes. The problem is when people come back to correct you and you maintain that they are wrong!

You are splitting hairs now Jim. No, he wasn't! Funny how the Prof is always right even when shown to be sprouting rubbish by numerous posters and umpteen links to the phone providers' official T&Cs.
You help nobody by repeatedly propagating false info.

Trust you to stick your neck in. The sign up links make no mention of charges, as usual. The likes of youur attitude does not help the forum either. I will leave you and those too helpless to help themselves to play with yourselves.

At the end of the day, the moral is double check what is and is not included.
Dial-up with its tendency for long calls will often mean even if inclusive you run the risk of breaking a 60 minute counter barrier, which can prove expensive.

I moved from O2 to Plusnet fibre 2 weeks ago. If I were you I'd just get on with it. Keep an eye on the Support questions as they raise and close questions saying they've ordered hardware, requested a date etc.
Regards
Pete from O2 to Plusnet fibre 8th April 2013
