Having just past the 14 days as a customer I got an email saying Current line speed:is 7.15 Mb, which seems much higher than the 1-1.5M the speed checkers show and the modem is showing - and considering the estimate of 0.5M (which I am sure was marked down from BT suggestion to cover themselves) and what the neighbours are suggesting - The Members centre is also showing 7.15M 24 hours later.
Could this discrepancy be related to failed speed tests from plusnet site, or does anyone have any other suggestions - just curious as I doubt speed can get much higher this far from exchange

Post a speed test http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html link
Probably the members centre is showing a default value (7.15 Mbps is the maximum speed of a BT Wholesale ADSL product), ADSL2+ is of course faster on short lines.

Okay ignore the web portal stuff.
You have a very very long line and the 1.3 Meg is about the best you will get

Thanks,
that is about what I thought (and I suspect very little chance of fibre for a a while, but since they want to build another 1000+ houses around here it may be a bit better than slim, breath isn't being held though)

There is a test that that tells you the IP Profile set by BT Wholesale. The Plusnet Line speed is supposed to be automatically set to just below that. The system that does that setting often fails.
As long as the Plusnet one is only just below the BTW one, or higher as yours is, there is no real need to worry.
To find the BTW one you go in two stages.
1) Run the BT Wholesale Performance Test, ignoring all the red instructions which are there to make sure the actual speed test result is valid.
2) Note the latency value on the results page if it matters to you. Then click the Further diagnostics button near the bottom. It will ask for your phone number. When you give it that, it will return a more detailed results page.
Your IP Profile is shown in the downstream text box.

I'd also like to know if that diagnostic test reports the IP Profile for upload.

The full response would be good as it would answer this: I'd also like to know if that diagnostic test reports the IP Profile for upload.

Re-running it comes as

For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 0.8 Mbps-2 Mbps.
IP Profile for your line is - 1.18 Mbps
