PlusNet - based in the US. ;)

[link to this post]

Have been getting IPs in the 146.200. x.x range lately.

Seems like these are based in the USA which causes problems with some websites. frown

Familiar tale now when phoning PlusNet: "we are aware but can not give a timescale for resolving". frown

Again, as per reporting useage problem, no status email as yet, despite this being a known problem for some while. frown

While it's hardly a perfect solution (seeing as it costs £5), you could always get a static IP from them.

It could be worse, it could have been listed as non-routable. With the IPv4 address space drying up I gather that some of the historically "reserved" blocks are being released for ISP use, and that can lead to problems when major routers are still configured to drop packets addressed to them.

There does seem to be an issue with the RIR data - see http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools#ipInformation|type=ipv...

Yes, it could be.

Just seems odd for a UK based company to issue US IPs that's all.

If you don't tell me which site isn't working, I can't get anyone to investigate it.

Oh no, it's you again! How about you actually be nice and clear for once?

How about you look up the RIR data for the IP range - it's your problem - not the websites!

We can't change that data on there

We've worked through the major geolocation databases and had them updated, but there are some websites/applications which use their own and need updating.

Not really... It's what people are having to do now that RIPE have none left to issue (apart from the final /22 that you'll get as a LIR/new LIR).

You either have the option of buying a block from someone else in the RIPE service region which at the rate of $15-20 per IP is expensive for a /16 ($1.31 Million) at the top end.

Works out far more cost effective to get a /16 from ARIN at $4000 a year...

What's actually wrong with the site? What problems are you having? We've just tested it out here on one of the 146.200.x.x IPs and it seems to work fine for us.

Not sure if websites are using their own database or not.

Have asked but as yet no reply.

The latest MaxMind GeoIP database (of which there are many other companies doing this same kind of thing) shows this range to be GB:

Text
1
2
$ grep -w 2462580736 GeoIPCountryWhois.csv
"146.200.0.0","146.200.255.255","2462580736","2462646271","GB","United Kingdom"

But I guess if the block has recently been moved/delegated from US back to GB, that's going to screw up many sites that run off geolocation-type databases.

Things must be getting tight on the old IPv4 address space front then - all the more reason to get IPv6 deployed and live.

Still getting same error message :-

" C************ is a UK website with UK sponsors. Unfortunately we are unable to offer the ********** service to your country.
AOL UK users are also unable to use the service from within the AOL browser because our sponsors cannot determine the geographic location due to the AOL IP block being based in the USA. AOL users should try using an external browser like Internet Explorer, and not AOL's internal browser."

Ta, we'll try and again and get in contact with the site. The 146.200.x.x. IPs that we've got were previously used in California. There isn't a single standard database of which range of IPs is in which country, a lot of sites use their own databases and some don't update their database as often as the updates are published by the 3rd parties that provide them.

It might not even be all of this range that's affected, we've been testing internally with an IP in the range and the site works fine. If you disconnect/reconnect then you'll get a different IP and it will probably work.

Thanks.

Sounds like you have done/are doing as much as you can.

I've no intention of switching my router off as that usually causes more problems. It went down a few days ago and I had to spend some while amending everything. frown

For now I can ssh into my other ISP and send via An X session. Not ideal and very slow, but it does sort of work.
