G.INP

[link to this post]

Can anyone explain how G.INP works. It has been enabled on my line (according to my modem HG612) which has meant that the d/l according to the modem has jumped from 43000 to 52000. My dowmload speed according to the speedcheckers has remained at 40060. Contacted Plusnet who said that they did not support G.INP. I thought it was implemented at cabinet level and was a way of reducing the crosstalk on the copper feed to the premises in which case why would Plusnet have to support it ?

Confused

Yes, plusnet don't have anything to do with it. Since it was enabled have you reconnected your PPPoE session from the router? You sometimes need to reboot the router if the speed changes at the modem.

Re: G.INP

It's Openreach that applies g.inp. not Plusnet. The most likely reason why your download sync speed has made that jump is that, prior to that, interleaving was turned on. Both g.inp and interleaving provide correction for short pulse of relatively intense interference, but the latter did so by imposing a permanent and large overhead whilst also adding to latency. In contrast, g.inp is rather more adaptive. It provides correction only for those short impulse periods without that permanent overhead.

As to why your actual download speed hasn't improved, that will most likely be due to the way bandwidth is being managed in the backhaul from the FTTC cabinet for your line. In principle, it ought to be automatic but might take some time and/or require the odd router reboot. However, I do mean just a few. Frequent resyncs can make the line management software think you connection is flaky.

nb. g.inp doesn't have anything to do with managing cross-talk. That's the role of vectoring, which has only been trialed in BT's networks (and brings other potential compatibility and other issues, like longer sync times). This is a useful and an succinct explanation.

What does your "Current line speed" say here? It might need a kick from Plusnet.

My thanks to you all. Yes I was confusing G.INP with Vectoring but was correct in thinking it was nothing to do with Plusnet. Interestingly since my post and without any intervention from me, my d/l speed has jumped to 47000.

That will be because the Plusnet "Current line speed" that kasg linked to has updated to correspond to the new IP Profile your higher sync generated. The update only happens a few times a day.

If you're running custom firmware on your HG612 you should make sure you're using a version that supports G.INP. After using the correct firmware my download speed went up by 10Mbps and I gained 4Mbps upload, latency drastically improved as well.

I'm using: bcm96368MVWG_fs_kernel_HG612V100R001C01B030SP08_webgui

The key thing with firmware for unlocked HG612s is that you use a B030SP08 version. All the B028 versions are obsolete and will not work correctly with G.INP.

Where does that output come from please? I can't find the same from mine.

Incidentally, although we all talk about the firmware in the HG612, it's the V100R001C01B030SP08 we mean, which in the GUI is labelled Software. I imagine, but I'm not sure, that the software can vary with a constant firmware.

You can check the "software" version using your browser. Just go to 192.168.1.1 (assuming that is your modem IP address) and sign in.

Yes, I flashed the HG612 with V100R001C01B030SP08 as this is the latest which supports G.INP according to KITZ. The SP10 does not support G.INP. I have a couple of these at clients offices where there is a problem and remote into the servers then view the stats. DSLStats allows me to take a snapshot of the connection details at various times of the day and stores them in a directory which I then access. Mind you, most of the ISP's first line support cannot understand the details and I usually get diverted to a real engineer !!. It's worth it just for that.

Sorry to have started this debate once again! I'm currectly with Plusnet's FFTC with BTOR's ECI Modem, model No. B-Focus V-2FUB/R Rev-B, and PLusnet's TG582n Router ALL using "original" firmwares. How do I know that my above BTOR ECI modem is supporting G.INP and is ENABLED??
I realised that I have to find a way of locking into my ECI Model while its WLAN port so that I could read its configurations etc, but for that how exactly I may do that as well?

Thanks for any recommendations.....

I am not aware of any way to unlock the ECI modem without drilling the case to open it and connecting to the serial port pads on the circuit board. Even if you go through this process, I am not aware of any firmware that provides bidirectional G.INP support and it is not clear the chipset is even capable of bidirectional G.INP with new firmware.

If you are interested in full G.INP support, it's probably best to get a version 3B HG612 with the white PSU from a well known auction site (don't pay much more than around £25), then install the unlocked B030SP08 firmware.

At the moment, Openreach seem to be concentrating their G.INP efforts on Huawei cabinets. G.INP appears to be more difficult to implement on the ECI cabinets owing to the chipset used on the line cards, and I am not aware of any clear plans from Openreach about G.INP on ECI cabinets.

I would only do this if the OP knows their cabinet is Huawei. If the cabinet is ECI then its likely not yet G.INP enabled.

I only got the BTOR's ECI modem working with a separate Plusnet's TG-582n Router! As I only been made aware today that there are separate BT's ECI and Hawaii only cabinets, but not mixed and matched inside the cabinet, may exist. Does it imply that I am currently connected to a BTOR ECI cabinet, and consequently buying another Hawaii modem for myself may be just a waste of time and money??
Thanks

There are no guarantees, unless you can find out your cabinet number from the BT wholesale checker and take a photo of the cabinet and others here can confirm.

No.

You need to put your phone number into the normal BT Wholesale checker and the line above the estimates table will tell you your phone cabinet number.

Then go and find it. The estimated FTTC speeds will give us some idea of its distance from you.

Near to it will be the FTTC cabinet. Compare how that looks with the three on this page. (The two 128s should say 96).

Would ECI Modem/chipset interworking OK with Hauwaii chipset in BTOR linecards in their FTTC cabinets without problems? Secondary would G.INP a added feature of Hauwaii Chipset only, not for ECI??
I'm still a bit confusing with that as I thought G.INP is part of the upgraded "Internation Standards" and as such should be supprted by both "upgraded" design versions of both ECI and Hauwaii chipsets. But again this G.INP feature could be chipset design versions dependent???

Just curious as to why you haven't updated to SP08?

There have been a number of firmware/software improvements since SP06 that you might not be able to take advantage of. e.g. extra DS bitloading tones available (if your connection is capable of using them)

What's the output from xdslcmd info --pbParams with SP06?

It is included within every snapshot Plink log.

This is mine (SP08):-
