Cabinet Capacity

[link to this post]

Hi
I've just ordered a house move with Plusnet. The new house is right next to the FTTC cabinet, however I can't order it because:

"FTTC is currently not available on this cabinet due to following reasons:- Capacity review: Your area is fibre enabled. Extra capacity is under review to allow order placement."

Estimate fix date for this is the 15th Sept. How likely is this to slip and what is the resolution? another FTTC cab?

I assume if someone disconnected their service a port would become available? Are plusnet capable of checking for this?

Any replies are appreciated.

Regards

That does sound like either extra cards inside the cabinet, though you would think that could happen earlier than September, or a second cabinet.

You are right though that as other people move out connections do become available. Usually snapped up with hours by the likes of the small resellers for their waiting customers.

I doubt if Plusnet provide such a service. Whether or not they do, I think you need to check using this first thing each morning and two or three times a day after, then get onto Plusnet PDQ if it shows as available.

Thanks RobertoS

Thats the checker I pulled the info from. Is that updated 'live' when ports become available?

I've a feeling it is live, but not 100% sure. Let's say "live-ish" anyway.

I seem to remember posts a couple of years back where at the start of the day someone couldn't get it, and by the end their order had been placed and went through.

Say it starts showing live at 10:20. Two people jump, one at 10:23, one at 10:24, to different ISPs. Only one will get it. Could be either.

BT's roadmap suggests they are implementing a feature called FTTC Waiters.

With that, they would accept an order like this, which then waits for capacity to become available.

Waiters are due to come in during Sep (i.e. for orders place from then onwards).

On the cabs that are full, OR are pushing to clear the backlog. They have recently said this though:

For a small number of cabs, where we need to install a 2nd DSLAM, RFS dates are have been provisionally estimated for July 2016. These will be adjusted once delivery dates are confirmed

So dates need to be treated with caution at the moment. Check roadworks.org for planned works if a new cab is needed.

No roadworks - so hopefully not a cab replacement.

This is the cab in question. Looks like a full size huawei to me. So possible 288 connections?

Your cabinet covers 616 properties (it's a Huawei 288).

I suspect it's a new cab. The cabinet has been in place since Jan 2012, so you would expect it to be fairly full already.

Interestingly Openreach didn't report it as full in their FTTC report from 18 Jun, although this is probably an oversight from them.

Seems odd that they would move it forward from Sept to July if it was a new cab? I need to go and see if there is any works going on.

Out of interest - how did you find out how many properties is covers?

It's on an Openreach database I have access to.

From what I've seen previously, additional line cards take a week to two. If dates keep slipping and are further down the line, then it's an indication of a new cab being needed.

My cab was not upgraded to FTTC. I was wondering how many lines it covers (CMSTE Cab: 24).
Thanks,

May well be tie pairs. Line cards sometimes go in before the previous one is exhausted.

Seen it take a month for new line card and tie pairs here, even where it didn't require street works.

I think BT are making numbers up.

Started at 15th Sept 2015, then July 22nd 2015 and now showing 25th July 2015.

That could be a stock of cards for upgrades coming in on 21 July triggering the 22nd date for all outstanding requirements, (as opposed to those in stock already allocated to new cabinets), and the final scheduling of specific cabinets.

Interestingly, if I put my postcode in that checker, its says my cabinet is at 100% capacity, and yet, i have just ordered a new phone line for a second fibre BB to double up my speeds and it came back as available and accepted?

Are you perhaps misinterpreting what you are seeing? The only references to percentages that I've seen on that site is the % of users at a particular location served by a specific cab or cable bundle.

OTOH I may well have blinkered vision and missing what is blindingly obvious to others. <g>

Oh, i could be.

On the checker, the table comes back with the info and at the end under 'cabinet' it says my cabinet id & 100%?

What this is telling you is that 100% of properties at that postcode are connected to that cab.

Try clicking the cab and you should see the list of postcodes connecting to that particular cab, each with a percentage which will range from 100% down to perhaps 5% or so. Now if you were to click on a postcode showing less than 100% you would see a list of the cabs serving that postcode and the percentage of the lines served by each cab.

Date keeps getting pushed back by 1 everyday. Incidentally I went over and checked the cab - no sign of a new one being installed.

Yesterday - the checked showed up as 'available' so a quick call to plusnet and the order was planed and confirmed by BT some 30 minutes later.

Looking at the checker this morning the date has dissapeared and only shows ADSL estimates with a small sentance at the bottom..

FTTC is currently not available on this cabinet due to following reasons:- Capacity review: Your area is fibre enabled. Extra capacity is under review to allow order placement.

So it looks like a single port became free - I just hope my order sticks!
