Plusnet Fibre EXTRA - Speed dropped

[link to this post]

I've been on Plusnet Fibre Extra for a few weeks now having upgraded from the Basic package and i've had the same speeds and its never changed which have been 73, 74 and 75mb phoned them up today 40 minutes until I got answered to find out system were down but he said my IP Profile just needs changing and the guy would call me back, Never got a call back, so phoned again later on today and was on waiting for 1 hour 3 minutes until someone answered, he said my line is 66 - 70mb and the ip doesn't need changing as Fibre works differently well im not too happy about it and here are my Results that I did use to have:

http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4903477999

http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4910595409

http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4910595409

http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4907510529

So why have I dropped to this now? I'm not really happy to be honest with ya frown 50.27mb
http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4924333532

http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4924338309

There must be a fault, my speed wouldn't just drop like that?
Some people you get to LISTEN to everything and do there up most to Help, but most of em at Plusnet are a set of Monkey's don't have a clue!

Have you actually done the basic checks
BT speedtest - further diagnostics to get the IP profile http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/ and here to get the Plusnet mirror of it https://portal.plus.net/my.html?action=data_transfer...

Plusnet said i would get around 53 Meg but i got got 64 Meg ( Brand New Cabinet ) from day one, then nearly 10 days later speed dropped to 54 Meg.
I was still in my cooling off period ( 14 Days ) so i rang plusnet and they dropped the speed down to a 38/10 product.
I get the Full 38 Meg download speed also my Estimated line speed was higher and that changed too.

Now looking to see if Plusnet will start the 55/10 in jan 2016

BT's test results says:

IP Profile for your line is - 70.07 Mbps

This is one of the main indicators that we want to get out of a BT speedtest - the IP Profile value.

It tells you that your sync speed is now roughly 72Mbps.

When you were getting speedtest.net results of around 75Mbps, you *probably* had an IP Profile of around 77Mbps, and a sync speed of around 80Mbps.

Why has your sync speed dropped? That is hard to tell, but people can offer advice if you post your router statistics.

However, you need to be aware that FTTC isn't like ADSL - your speed can drop over time, with a primary cause being crosstalk from other FTTC subscribers. As FTTC takeup increases, those extra subscribers interfere with your line, and your speed drops.

It is the primary reason that you are given a speed range. Your range appears to be 66-80Mbps; the lower end of the range is designed to take account of most of this crosstalk. Thus you can expect that your speed *could* drop that far - without BT taking any action to fix things. If your sync speed could drop to 66Mbps, you could probably expect speedtest.net results to drop to just over 60Mbps.

Other reasons are possible - including line faults that BT will attempt to fix. But be prepared for it to really be just crosstalk, and set expectations appropriately.

The interesting bit about those results is that the Plusnet profile is higher than the IP profile indicating that the IP profile has dropped from just over 74.2 to 70.07 recently which as others have suggested may just be down to cross talk

Indeed, when I first got FTTC after it was made available I was getting 54Mb/s but that has slowly degraded to about 43Mb/s. Upload remained stable at about 8-9Mb/s.

BT Infinity 2 43mbs down 9mbs up

Been there, done that with Plusnet. Indeed your profile seems to mirror mine a lot. I too raised a fault but nowt became of it. They would only look at mine if it dropped below 64mb. If your speed drops below 80% they might look at it but don't raise your hopes too high. I started off high (over 70mb) but as more and more people have signed up for fibre, speeds have tailed off. Not that I'm complaining. 65mb compared to the estate universal speed of 1.4mb is a big difference. Hence the big sign up by most here and no doubt more cross talk. I just use it as is.

As for sudden tail offs i.e down to 54mb or lower, I put that down to congestion.

Just got in touch with Plusnet as they have never been in contact with me and its been well over 72 hours, they are going to forward it on to BT, they said the network in my area is overloaded, they are going to put me in another slot or something, on the circuit, I dont know if this will fix anything but he says it will, so I don't know...

Been there, had speeds of 74mbps. Over time this has reduced to 64. Apparently due to cross talk at the cabinet.

Think yourself lucky, I also joined onto a new FTTC cab, started at 43-45MB last year, now its down to 31MB and a nice drop in dload speeds of 2mbit/s. Upload has always remained the same at about 7-8MB.

PlusNet cant do anything about it until it drops below BT's "recommended" minimum, which in my case would be 25MB.

BT suck.

My connection has dropped from 74 to 60.
Should plusnet be doing something about that ?

Crosstalk at the Cabinet. Nothing can be done as far as I'm aware.

If it is. You would need to see the line stats to confirm that guess.

Welcome to my world! I had Plusnet fibre installed a year ago, brand new cabinet and I was one of the first to be installed in the village. Great speeds of 74-75mb for a couple of months and then slowly went downhill. Lucky if I get 60mb now, but has recently dropped to around 50-52mb during certain times.

I contaced Plusnet a few months ago and they said there were no faults on my line and my speed was as expected at around 60mb. My line is rated at 65mb so I think in their eyes anything between 50-65 is acceptable.

I would drop to the 35mb service but I need the high speed upload so stuck wth this for now. I guess there's not much I can do about i, but it's not really good enough when I'm paying a premium for 'extra' that is 25mb short of it's potential.

Well strangely today my download speed has jumped up to 72mb. It's been around average 50-60 over the past 8 months. I test it pretty much 2-3 times a week and always around that mark so why the sudden jump up to almost the max speed I had a year ago when fibre was first installed? Could something have changed at my cabinet? I haven't made any changes at my end. Hopefully it stays this way but who knows.

I have a similar experience- however on a significant number of occasions that I drive past "my" cabinet there is an Openreach van and man working in/on the two cabinets. So it is never a steady state, plus Virgin have been doing a marketing push in the neighbourhood and they may have reduced the traffic/interference on the BT lines.

Mine also jumped back up to 38mbits down and 12mbits up a few weeks ago, which is close to my initial connection speeds over a year ago, which was nice as that small increase makes quite a difference to download speeds. No idea why.
