Samknows report card speeds

[link to this post]

Im on Samknows reporting and until now I have had a solid 70-76 download consistently for months/years.

Ive been on a 80/20 Plusnet FTTC service for ages, on fixed IP so I dont think I was affected by the network change they did recently.

Today I got this report from Samknows

Samknows speeds

Speedtest from TBB

TBB Speedtest

Speedtest from last night (note the slow speeds)

Last night

TBB BQM

My Broadband Ping

Anyone else seeing anything like this?
Is this a Samknows problem?

No reason our test should not reflect a drop in connection speed or ability of provider to get data from you to them.

If other speed tests are in line with us too, then points to a SamKnows issue, or something PlusNet did that impacts just that

Once or twice I have seen performance issues with Samknows and they have always been resolved by rebooting the Samknows box.

I see variation in download speed (also using a new SamKnows white box)

I now run the BT Wholsale Performance test each day

http://www.speedtest.btwholesale.com/

to check the speed. If it is quite a bit below what it should be I power cycle the router and repeat the speed test. Often the power cycle causes the speeds to be improved. If the power cycle didnot improve the performance I would power off and on the SamKnows box.

If that does not work I would then go to the next stage of the BT Wholesale test (which requires you to change the target address in the router setup page).

If this test gives a bad result then you can report it to PN support for them to action. I have had OpenReach "Do something" to correct the problem as a result of the bad result from the Diagnostic test.

Line looks lovely from our side! Have you rebooted the samknows box? Has it returned to previous speeds, or still slow?

The behaviour after 20th April:
No, I don't see this.

The behaviour before 20th April:
I do see this.

The test results are almost invariably either 72.6Mbps or 68.7Mbps, nothing in between. Whereas the line is a steady 80/20 sync.
https://s24.postimg.org/sarlgt8dx/Sam_Knows-_Speed_H...

All those lower speed results must be knocking a few Mbps off the average, which undoubtedly affects the outcome in the annual Ofcom report.

Still all over the place, Ive rebooted and no difference.

See the speed tests below, something is wrong?

TBB speedtest

Speedtest.net

Samknows shows a dropoff on April 19th.

SamKnows is single thread and three threads, and your result is similar to 3 times our single thread....

Our main test is 6 threads (we see Gig/Biz people pushing 600 Mbps+ over single thread) and speedtest.net is 8

As a rough guide if used the same sample dropping of ookla, an average of 58 Mbps would appear, and with no wobbly lines you'd probably not be panicking.

So given SamKnows and us are saying something is up, it looks like something is up.

And others on PlusNet are seeing decent tbbx1 vs httpx6 so nothing wrong at our end

Andrew, thanks for the info and your conclusions.

Do you rekon this is something within the PN network, or something inside here (router?)

I haven't changed anything here for at least 1 year.

My setup is a HG612-Asus DSL55U.

Thanks

Assume the HG612 is pppoe bridging to the Asus router.

If the combo was working well previously and you've restarted everything and confident no settings or firmware changes, or you find at distinctly off-peak times e.g. 2am to 7am that things are good then would say PlusNet side.

You could if possible try the hardware out on a friends line

Yes thats the setup, Not really got anyone nearby on FTTC so cant test anything.

Ill check connections etc.

Ill try to raise a fault with PN, I've also posted on the community boards.

Last Ofcom report actually just used samknows testing from one month. The sync speed report which is their other output would not be affected at all
