Migrating to PlusNet

[link to this post]

I have almost finally decided to migrate to PN (even got my MAC key ready) but am finding responses from the sales team slow and not very comprehensive so maybe get some answers here?

1) I have a web site that uses web space provided by my current ISP but the domain is hosted by a 3rd party company and I intend to host with PN. Once I migrate I will lose my webspace and need to reload my web on PN. How long are they likely to take sorting out DNS once I point my domain at PN nameservers or is that something I can do myself via the customer interface. Just wondering how long my website is going to be out of action.

2) Similarly for email MX records - can I make the DNS changes myself?

3) Do I get email for my .co.uk and .me.uk domains in separate pop3 mailboxes?

Any information from somebody who has been there and done it gratefully received.
Thanks,
Martin

If you rely on pop 3 email, plus net are not the most reliable. They have had a few incidents in the past where they have lost 1000s of emails.

* Upload your site to your PN webspace
* Ask your registrar to change the authoritative nameservers to NS1.FORCE9.NET and NS2.FORCE9.NET
* Raise a ticket on your account here asking that we transfer the domain in for hosting.
* We will then add the domain to our Domain Control Systems. It will take up to 4 hours for DNS to propagate on our systems and 24-48 hours for the outside world.

Yes, this is done here.

If both domains are hosted on the same account and you're using our POP3 servers then email to both domains will be sent to the same mailboxes. You can set up independent MX records for each domain though.

Hope that helps.

Kind Rgds,

Thanks Dusty,

I did do some research and have seen all the past embarrassment with email, but trust they have learnt lessons and it will not be repeated!

Cheers,
Martin

Thanks for your response Bob. Just one follow-up. I know the DNS propagation times, but how long (typically) does it take for your support team to implement change to your systems once I submit the request: minutes, hours, days etc?

Thanks
Martin

Should be done within a day Martin. The front line support staff have access to do this. Failing that you could always bump this thread with the ticket ID and I'm sure me or one of my colleagues could pick it up.

Unfortunately the first time they said they learnt their lesson and oops it happened again. Plusnet have a habit of not learning lessons on a number of fronts. Saying that the connection for me was good, but i never got over 200k on torrents on BT i have got over 500k on a single torrent. Something i never did in my two years plus at plusnet.

In all fairness to PN Dusty, they have improved tremendously, not there 100% but certainly 100% better than 12 months ago.

I was there till September this year and my speeds were never as high as now. Saying that peak time BT are just as bad as PN, if not worse.

It all depends on how you look at it, I see lot of PN staff trying to go out of the way to help people here, don't know much about how they deal within their own forums etc. This clearly shows that a company is trying to regain the confidence of the customers, I am sure it is not all being done to throw it away again. Mistakes happen, many ISP's have done it, even government lost 70% of britons data. The only thing that would keep me interested in them is if they are trying to make an effort, and I can see that they are doing that more than ever. I am with virgin and looking at the size the organization, they are the worst ISP ever from my experience.
