Advice please - thinking of migrating to PlusNet

[link to this post]

Hi

Can I ask a couple of quick questions please as I am thinking of migrating to PlusNet (if I can).

Currently on Pipex, and have been thinking about leaving because of the Tiscali thing but havent got round to it, but think I need to sort it out now.

I checked last night via a link provided on how I check if I have been moved to the Tiscali network, and the 4th line down had Tiscali in the address, so I guess I have. So the question here is, can I migrate to PlusNet without any problems?

Second question is about the package I would/should choose.
I dont download hardly anything, and my connection is mostly surfing and uploading photographs as photography is my hobby. Are pages you view counted as what you download? Reason I ask is because I view a lot of photographs etc. (Sounds naive I expect but I need to know lol.)

The other part of it is, my son has been having major problems with his Virgin cable: he upgraded to the 20meg for his XBox gaming and its cr*p - he has been given all sorts of excuses blah blah and we thought of maybe sharing the internet connection. I have looked at the Pro package, (and assuming I can migrate without any problems), would this be the one to choose? Or would the other one I was looking at for

I've no hesitation in saying that I don't regret migrating to PlusNet, in July, after 5+ years with Pipex.

Assuming that Pipex manage to give you a working mac code there should be no problem migrating to PlusNet - make use of this http://www.plus.net/switch/ when you do.

Hopefully a PlusNet staff member will answer your other questions - unlike Pipex they are allowed to post in forums.

Thanks very much nadger - Ive been reading your posts for many months, even though I havent posted on the Pipex forum for a couple of years now, but I still look in from time to time, but I have been reading regularly since last summer when the Tiscali takeover started to take place. Thanks for that link, I will certainly use it when I get further advice.

Ive been watching and waiting to see what would happen, and it looks like the time has finally come and the decision is made. I just need to pick the right package that would suit both myself and if my son gives up his cable, his purposes too.

Yes, hopefully a staff member will help and advise me.

Thanks again.

Linda

FYI most ISPs count both downlods + uploads towards your BB usage per month,
however some don't count uploads and this is an example of one

Thats very useful, thanks Alastair.

I keep the sizes down for uploads most of the time by resizing for my galleries, the only time they would be large is for my sales gallery will full size images, so your link was very relevant for my purposes.

I know this sounds (and is dim lol) but is every page you view on the internet classed as a download? I have always (probably naively) thought that downloads was stuff people downloaded like software, films and music.

Thanks very much for your info.

Linda

AFAIK the answer is yes, i.e. data from the Internet to your computer.

Plusnet have free overnight usage.

Oh yes, I see. Both of those were quite enlightening lol, so thanks again for that.

Its still a difficult choice as to which package might suit best - I would hate to run out of usage, but on the other hand I have always classed my use as fairly light, but have no idea what gaming does to usage.

PlusNet's packages all come with free overnight usage so anything you do between midnight and 8am doesn't count.

If you've got large uploads or downloads to do and you can schedule these till after midnight then it won't affect your usage.

With what you say you're doing it's unlikely that you'd need more than Option 2 (8GB). You'll not run out of usage as you can opt to add extra on a PAYG basis for

plusnet BBYW Option2

You get an allowance per month, however you can buy extra usage if needed not expensive. So you dont have to run out
And Plusnet have a usage meter, so you can see what you are using.
Take a look here http://portal.plus.net/support/broadband/usage/vmbu.shtml

Might I suggest that you don't worry too much about which PlusNet Broadband Your Way option you go for and instead employ a 'suck it and see' approach. Though there are certain limitations, it is generally the case that you can move between the options at no charge, so why not join and select (say) option 2 and see how things go - you can monitor your usage via the portal and after a week or two see how you are doing - if you see you are going to go over the included 8GB by a little bit you can up your limit by a few GB and still come out cheaper than option 3. If you see you are going to go over by quite a way you can switch to option 3. If you find you need to go for the PRO package you can swap to that also. The only restrictions are that you can't change your included allowance more often than every 30days without incurring a charge and under certain conditions downgrades incur a charge - you can check the details here: http://www.plus.net/support/service/policies/product_change_policy.shtml#ResidentialBroadbandProductChanges
Edit: fixed typos
