Re: More than four wired ethernet connections

This is useful, thanks.

Thanks I'll invest in a v long ethernet cable and then start experimenting with different locations for the switch and second wireless point.

Thanks for the suggestion. Sadly it didn't work. So the Belkin switch is back on the black list!

The switch will not have auto-sensing ports so you would have needed a cross-over cable to connect two networking devices together using the normal belkin ports. That's why there is a uplink port normally with a switch/button next to it top switch the port from normal to cross-over.

Did you try the uplink port switch in the other position?

Or just buy a new switch. You can get 8 port switches for under a tenner now with all ports auto-sensing so you can use straight or cross-over cables.

Thanks Peter

The switch doesn't have an uplink switch/button. It has six sockets: 1,2,3,4,5, uplink. And it says "uplink or 5" next to the last two, so I assume that if I use uplink I then can only use 1 thru 4.

But in any case I now plan to replace the Belkin (it is a F5D9100 and was probably originally priced in £sd) with a new switch, which as you say would be cheap. Either that, or I'm considering redeploying a redundant ADSL router as a switch and wireless access point. I plan to look into this (see other responses).

Thanks again
