Download limits and IP TV

With upcoming IP TV services like YouView supposedly rolling out next year, how are broadband packages going to accomodate the increased download traffic given that most ISPs have imposed monthly download limits.

I have my home networked up and I'm keen on an IP-based service like YouView but I'm not sure if I'll be able to stay with an ISP like PlusNet if the maximum monthly download is 60GB with an extra 5GB charged at a fiver a pop.

I'm just thinking ahead, I wonder if PlusNet have done so....

A local cache would be the cheapest option. And peering would be a given also.

Exchange caches and better peering aren't cost effective; the cost of buying and powering a cache eclipses the additional cost of bandwidth, and peering wouldn't really save much dollar either. The only way I could see that sort of thing working would be if a semi-clone of Sky Anytime appeared with a HDD-equipped set top box downloading its little heart out overnight... but of course using about 10-15w of power (thus costing the punter £15-20 a year in power, give or take).

...for live TV however, you're scuppered.

So it looks like that with most ISPs with usage caps, IP TV will be a non-starter

On the low usage cap packages, yes non-starter, the hint there is if you want IP TV upgrade to their better allowance packages

Alternatively BT Vision uses their own network and doesn't eat into any usage allowance.

It can be done, but I guess it depends on the size of the provider that you use for your network.

I'm currently at the highest allowance for PlusNet so may have to consider moving from PN
