re inSSIDer
Having looked at the fora it seems to use inSSIDer it should be installed on a laptop or desktop connecting by wireless to the router. Is this correct?
My laptop is a company one and it would not be etiquette to use such software on it
Hmmmm! unless there was a non-installer version???
If you aren't connecting anything wirelessly to the router InSSIDer is not needed.
If you are connecting anything to the router wirelessly then it is a useful tool to improve the performance of your wireless network. It lets you see what other wireless networks are around you and avoid clashes with them. Those clashes are the local wireless equivalent of crosstalk /congestion on the main internet connection between the router and the ISP.
If you click the
Download button on the link, it offers the usual
Run or
Save options. Is that what you meant by a non-installer version?
You can install InSSIDer on any computer on your network that has wireless capability, even if that computer is wired to the router. It just detects the wireless routers operating within range. It doesn't need to be on the work laptop to do that, but gives you the information you need to select the optimum channel on your router. Your laptop will automatically detect your router's channel - that is what it does now.
The only snag is that the relative strengths of the signals from other sources can be wildly different in different rooms of the house, and it is the strength where the laptop is working wirelessly that matters, if that is a different room to where InSSIDer is running.
I don't see that "etiquette" is an issue with this. It doesn't look at traffic, just signal strength from wireless routers and Wireless Access Points. It doesn't detect other wireless computers/laptops. Would your company IT department really object to you installing it on your laptop? Maybe they should be using themselves! How big is the company/office?
