Post 80/20 with the original modem my speeds peaked one day at 53Mbps but since then it's fallen to 26 down / 16 up and the modem replacement has made no difference. I've raised a ticket and am awaiting the outcome.... (it's a trial after all)

Yes, quite a few people on the community forum seem to be suffering from this. Mine's OK, apart from gradual reduction since the trial started from around 70Mbps download speed to around 60 now, due I believe to the infamous DLM, which only seems to know how to slow things down, not make them faster again frown

Are your sync speeds also fluctuating regularly, or is it just throughput speeds?

I'm on the 80/20 Plusnet trials as an experiment with a sub-40Mb service, but as my connection has been flaky for months, it re-syncs regularly anyway.

That's why I haven't really provided any 80/20 feedback just yet.

I have an engineer's visit booked for Saturday that MIGHT fix things once & for all.

DLM has recently capped my connection at 24999 k sync speed & I currently get NOTHING from the D2 & D3 bands.

It's the sync speed that fluctuates and the throughput is mostly consistent with this, apart from occasional dips. I'm syncing at 63217 today, after a power cut this morning forced a resync, yesterday it was 62914. I started off on over 75000.

Any ideas as to what may be causing the re-syncs?
e.g. noisy line, SNRM dropping massively when the phone is used etc.
Does attenuation vary & is there any pattern to the re-syncs such as weather conditions, time of day etc?

It isn't constantly re-synching and tends to hold steady for up to a week. Phone usage doesn't seem to affect it (although the landline is rarely used). I haven't really monitored attenuation as it's not on the GUI, noise margin hovers around or just under 6dB. The one thing that does seem to vary a lot is the attainable rate, which can be anything from just over 70 to 80 (currently 75332 with sync 63251). I haven't noticed the weather making a difference, although it did when I was on ADSL. Similarly with time of day.

Edit: what's the most useful xdslcmd - I can't remember!

If you wanted someone to graph a snapshot of your connection, these commands copied & pasted as a block (or entered separately) into PuTTy terminal & saved into a single log file would be everything required:-

xdslcmd info --pbParams
xdslcmd info --Bits
xdslcmd info --linediag
xdslcmd info --show
xdslcmd info --stats

(include the blank line at the end)

The best of all though, to see how your connection changes over a period of time & to possibly see what has prompted a re-sync would be to use the Windows Ongoing graphing scripts.

They work on old knackered XP (SP3), Vista & Win 7 machines.
Apparently they also work on a Linux machine with a Windows VM.

Interesting thread - just as i'm looking into new options post contract with O2 (who's gone down the pan this year), in June.

I'm leaning towards the 'Extra Fibre Broadband' but I took this to mean that this type of package would get priority traffic management. Then I read some people talking of an extra £5/month for that priveledge. So 'Extra' only increases the daytime download limit (120GB) and still doesn't recieve priority traffic management?

Well I came across the table with the various throttling numbers, seems a bit of a large jump between 'Extra' and 'Pro add on' even though it's only £5/month extra - like it's only really costing them £5/month to unthrottle all that traffic? Seems like a bit of a gimmick to me.

The best way to compare is using http://usergroup.plus.net/prodcomp1.php There are some differences in speeds expected between Fibre Value and Fibre Extra, but the main difference is the allowance.

I'm sure that the vast majority of people do not find the "throttling" on Value and Extra a problem; I never even notice it.
