After a number of tests by PlusNet the "solution" seems to be either:

1. Turn "Interleaving" on permanently by the PlusNet wholesaler.
As I am not a gamer, increased ping times do not bother me.
So far the telephone line seems to have stabilized.
Or:
2. The rain has washed down so many leaves the Net may have been blocked.

Interleaving will only help for slightly intermittent lines or lines with errors on it generally. The outcome for the problem you have had would more than likely be minimal, from personal experience.

If your phone line has been sorted you will need to leave your broadband connection to stabilise, usually around the 72 hour mark. Your broadband should then pretty much be back to normal.

It wasn't the rain.
It wasn't the Sky.
It wasn't the cloud.
It wasn't the leaves.

The solution deserves a separate topic.
Which I will be posting soon.
