throttling / traffic management

hi everyone.
i've been with plusnet since around november 2012 and despite a few hiccups am generally happy with the service.

Although the past couple of months it has become impossible to use any streaming service at all.

At any time of day/night.

My wife has had to resort to downloading stuff thru iplayer as she cannot watch anything directly on it...constant buffering before getting the "insufficient bandwidth" message.

The same even happens when she is just replaying radio shows on iplayer. Problem exists with 4od and pretty much all similar sites.

I've contacted plusnet who have kindly sent a link to their site which tells me where to put my router, set up my wireless basically, which isn't any sort of problem because it was working fine before.

i then discovered their traffic management policy/explanation - which seems to suggest to me that the portion of bandwidth allocated to streaming services is deemed low importance and therefore is one of the first to be throttled?

Does anyone else have this problem at all?

We've tried shutting everything but the browser down - doesn't make a blind bit of difference...

I've checked our down speed and it normally comes in round about the 5-6Meg mark...

Any clues/hints/tips/suggestions would be much appreciated...

So which year?

Re the problem itself, which Plusnet package are you on? And although you think it won't be the wireless because it was working before, have you tried wired to confirm that?

Are the speed tests at 5-6Mbps done wired or wireless?

What sort of download speeds are you getting? What does running a speedtest here tell you?

I'd be interested to see the results from an iPlayer steaming test too.

Are your computers connected wirelessly? If they are, try connecting via an ethernet cable to see if it makes any difference.

If you can provide me with a recent support ticket reference then I can take a quick look at your account and see if I can spot anything untoward?

yep. two of them - one petrol one diesel. or something.

and 2011. the service has been fine generally but really the past couple of months have been terrible.

the package is plusnet extra - though i somehow managed to wangle unlimited b/band usage on it.

the 5-6meg tests were wireless - will try wired tonight if the chance arises.

So Plusnet aren't pre-activating any porn blocker then? Or are you referring to BBC Cookery courses?

It probably isn't the wireless, and Bob Pullen is on the case, but it might be useful to install InSSIDer to keep an eye on competing wireless channels anyway. I find it hypnotic .
