Than you very much - that is really rubbing it in - my exchange is fibre enabled but they aren't going to enable my cab
How did you find out that they were not going to enable your cab? I am on one of the exchanges that won the race to infinity which has now been fibre enabled, but as yet the checkers say that I cannot get fibre. I would be interested to find out whether that was just because they were still working on it or whether that was permanent. Still, getting 20Mb on the 21CN by the end of tomorrow so it is not all gloom and doom, but if I could find out for sure that would be good.

If you don't upgrade in effect you'll be downgrading - since you already have the quicker speeds. So I'd keep the faster connection.

You miss my point. I can't notice nor observe it, other than through speed tests. I don't need it.

I only went on the trial because it got me away from 2Mbps upload that irritated me a tiny little bit, having been on 40/10 at IDNet.

I can always upgrade later if things change radically from:

- no P2P but iPlayer now and then, usually radio even then;
- an occasional Sky-feed of an F1 race;
- browsing, shopping and being here;
- a few emails a day;
- occasional small uploads to RobertoS and another site, which is the only usage where I noticed the 2Mbps after 10Mbps;
- typical peak + offpeak usage 7-8GB, highest ever < 11GB caused mainly by lots of speed tests.

Can you give me a good reason for spending an unnecessary £42pa when money, though not a problem, is far from abundant?

As I've said - the chances of my upgrading are high, say approximately 99.87374%?

I see what you're saying smile

I'm paying £3.25 extra to go from 18Mbit ADSL2+ to 40Mbit fibre. In the short time i've had it I'd say its worth it for the changes in latency and upload speed alone.

Would I pay a further £3.25 to go up another notch (80Mbps for me, 56 for you)? In time I think I would but today I wouldn't. It would be purely to show off without any real world application that would be of use to me. Also FTTC is the best most of us are going to get for a long time. I kind of like knowing there is an upgrade path out there for me.

I think I'm 250m from the cabinet, almost all of which is underground and then a DP and dropwire to the house.

Now if only my wife wasn't on statutory maternity pay I could afford it smile

Time to get promoted at work I think!

Too late for me to stop you now! It's only a few quid though so don't regret it.

Your usage is quite low! I share my connection with up-to 7 people. Generally speaking around 5. So it's worth it for us. The upload speed makes a huge difference. With 40/2 whenever anyone uploaded my speeds shot down to as low as 10Mbps and if it was a torrent upload it would go as low as 2Mbps.
Since 80/20 not noticed this at all.

My cabinet is at the bottom of my road - approximately 50 metres away. My line then comes down the front of the house and runs literally around the front. side and round the back where the master is. The lines been repaired twice so there's 2 joints on my property with jelly crimps. Not ideal but hey-ho. I fixed it myself. Somebody enjoys cutting our lines around here. Happened to a few neighbours too...

There's a good 30 metres of cable around the property. I get full speeds with an SNR of around 16db which means it's stable enough smile

I think my modems overheated a few times as speeds have shot down to literally 0.2Mbps and the modem was boiling, too hot to touch, even accessing the GUI was really slow. Since wall mounting it this seems to have fixed itself.

Out of interest why Plusnet over BT?

Also could plusnet not offer you any deals or is that strictly only when you're out of contract with plusnet. When I upgraded to Sky Fibre they discounted my line rental to £1 to offset the cost increase & I was barely into the contract.

& to answer your question - rather than waffling on.... Upgrade cause you can! THE NOVELTY FACTOR smile

Thanks. That file will not open on my Mac as far as I can see, but as my exchange was not worked upon until March this year that file is too early to be of use to me based upon the date in the file name.
