I think my modems overheated a few times as speeds have shot down to literally 0.2Mbps and the modem was boiling, too hot to touch, even accessing the GUI was really slow. Since wall mounting it this seems to have fixed itself.
Is this the modem or router? I ask because the modem doesn't have a GUI (an easily accessible one anyway).
Also when did you receive the modem, was it before August 2011 and was it swapped out for a new one earlier this year if so.

My openreach engineer said the modem has to be wall mounted due to heat issues too....
Any engineers know if this is accurate?

Given that walls insulate and build up heat, I doubt it. However, I'm, no engineer.

The modems only have vents on the sides, so being mounted to a wall lets the heat out the top of the device.

The early versions of the Huawei were very prone to overheating when lying down, [groan]. The next ones less so. I've had both and no problem with either sitting on the desk in a hot room and occasional direct sun.
Openreach recommendation is apparently to wall mount them anyway just in case. Airflow is better that way.

They changed mine before the big swap out policy so I don't know if it is another old one or the newer version, but since being mounted on the wall by the engineer replacing it, I haven't had it drop once, touch wood.

Similar question. I was on Plusnet Extra until 03/09/12 when I moved to Fibre Extra.
My download speed has been roughly 60 meg since the first day.
Plusnet shows:
Estimated line speed:
63Mb (Accurate to within +/- 1Mbit) - Checked on 2012-08-18 16:39:32
Current line speed:
77.4 Mb
and BT this:
I P Profile for your line is - 77.43 Mbps
Reading Jelv's thread about IP profile correlating to Plusnet's reported line speed that looks good but shouldn't I be getting closer to that rather than the estimate? Also my estimate was last checked before Fibre was enabled. Does that make a difference?
Thanks,
Duncan

Are you testing over wireless or wired? It needs to be wired, as wireless is nearly always slower.

Yes, but see question above re wireless vs. wired (mind you, if you're getting even 60Mbps wireless that will be better than I've ever achieved!). Which speed tester(s) are you using? BTW you are on the highest possible IP profile, indicating maximum sync speed of 79999.
Also my estimate was last checked before Fibre was enabled. Does that make a difference?
No.
