Re: Moving be Plus.Net FTTC from BeThere/O2 ADSL2+

I too have left o2 for Plusnet Extra Fibre. Order placed today. Bt wholesale has the following estimates for me:

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL2+ broadband line speed of 11Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 6.5Mbps and 15Mbps. Our test also indicates that your line could support an estimated ADSL 2+ Annex-M broadband upstream line speed of 1Mbps and downstream line speed of 11Mbps; typically the downstream speed would range between 6.5Mbps and 15Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 71.3Mbps and upstream line speed of 20Mbps.

Not sure how much I trust them though, because I currently get 6Mb with o2 whilst being on their fastest connect, with a downstream attenuation of 35db

Saying that, I'm just under 100m from the green cabinet on my road. Eager to find out what I'll get

BT are talking sync speed and their 11 meg ADSL2+ estimate is about right.

If that is sync it is too low.

Sync speed is 7.5MB. Had so many engineers over the years, all saying this is the best I can get. Guess it must just be the copper in my premises...that's why I'm a bit skeptical about getting anywhere near 70Mb on Fibre. Will find out in a few weeks though

FTTC generally adjusts down, not up, if it is going to, and takes no account of the estimate anyway!

Plus...

The Initial adjustment to the first sync tends to happen within the first 48 hours or so. Any mention of 10 days is a myth that is readily perpetuated.

Monitoring then continues forever, and any problems on the line can trigger further adjustments (reducing speed and/or adding interleaving, which can also reduce speed). In these cases, the adjustment downwards happens within 24 hours, while the adjustment back upwards can take 3-4 weeks.

35dB should be good for 13K or so sync at 6dB SNR on ADSL2+. Speeds of around 11.5 Meg perhaps. Don't know about the fibre speeds.

Then it will likely damp your Fibre speed.

This may be a ridiculous question, but can BT replace the copper wiring inside the premises? Or would it require a whole new line being installed?

The FTTC installation basically isolates anything further inside than the master socket, so poor home wiring should have no effect whatsoever.

However the modem is expected to be next to the master socket. The router can be as far aways as you like, via ethernet and/or Homeplugs, though ethernet is best.

PN can order a Home Wiring Solution for you if the master socket is in an inconvenient place. The engineer will instal that, so the modem can be up to 30m from the master. Often, the master is moved at the same time, with the new wiring used for the purpose.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk | Domains,website and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Plusnet Extra Fibre (FTTC). Sync ~ 53.5/15.2Mbps @ 600m. - BQM

So just an update on this. Got connected today with PlusNet Extra Fibre.

IP Pofile on the plusnet Member site says - 78MB
Speedtest.net speed- 49MB

Should there really be at 30MB difference, or is this probably down to the [censored] quality of wiring in my premises...as I mentioned before, I only got 6Mb on a 24MB connection

Your linespeed will be set at the maximum available while we determine your actual line speed.

Is that a wired or wireless connection you are using?
