I just re-read the whole thread and realised that the current result is on O2 - I though it was a pre-ADSL2+ PlusNet result.

That's fine OnFire smile.

A couple of points though. Try that daytime I suggested and give us stats taken immediately after. It could be something odd happened 53 days ago smile.

Second, does this checker mention FTTC, and if so what does it say? Your exchange has got FTTC in some places.

Don't worry if this checker has that 6Mbps estimate for ADSL2+. That's probably what the Plusnet system is picking up, and with you being on O2 LLU possibly hasn't been updated since before you went to them.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk | Domains,website and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Plusnet UnLim Fibre (FTTC). Sync ~ 54.0/14.9Mbps @ 600m. - BQM

Thanks. Will reboot in daytime and post results straight after.

Yes, I can get FTTC, but probably will not yet because it is more expensive - double the cost.

For all ADSL and WBC Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) services, the stable line rate will be determined during the first 10 days of service usage. Throughput/download speeds will be less than line rates and can be affected by a number of factors within and external to BT's network, Communication Providers' networks and within customer premises.

The Stop Sale date for Datastream is from 30-Jun-2012; the Formal Retirement date for Datastream is from 30-Nov-2013. The Stop Sale date for IPstream is from 30-Nov-2012; the Formal Retirement date for IPstream is from 30-Nov-2013.

If the End User wishes to migrate from their current Broadband supplier they will need to contact them in the first instance to obtain a MAC (Migrations Authorisation) Code, and then contact their new Broadband supplier to arrange for the service to be migrated.

Note: If you decide to place an order for a WBC fibre product, an appointment may be required for an engineer to visit the end user's premises to supply the service.
Please note that postcode and address check results are indicative only. Most accurate results can be obtained from a telephone number check.

Is ADSL2+, (or ALL), ticked in your router GUI? You may need to go in as SuperUser, but possibly can see it in the Administrator/administrator login.

Also have a read of:-

Ring/Bell wire;
Miscellaneous nasties.

Just in case anything there applies.

Does your phone line ever crackle?

Phone line never crackles, and there are no internal extensions.

Logged in as a SuperUser and got this:

O2_ADSL2plus

Connection Information

Uptime: 0 days, 1:03:50

Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/MB]: 1.97 / 4.16

Connection Settings

PVC Info (VPI.VCI): 0.101

Type: ETHoA

Thanks for the help. Any clues above? I think I will probably have to phone o2 and ask them what is going on.

Have just seen this:

http://service.o2.co.uk/IQ/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE?N...

The difference between O2 ADSL and O2 ADSL2+

ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. This technology lets you transmit huge amounts of digital information through existing phone lines. It's essentially the technology that makes broadband possible.

O2 ADSL uses BT phone lines. The reason broadband lets you receive phone calls while online is because phone calls use low frequency signals while higher frequencies are used for Internet data. Both frequencies can happily run together on the same phone line when you use the ADSL filters that we supply to separate your phone line into the voice and data channels, thats why it is important to use a filter on every phone.

O2 ADSL 2+ uses even higher frequencies for data communications. This means you can send even more data along the phone line at faster speeds. This is the technology used for O2 Home Broadband speeds on the packages that cover speeds up to 20 meg.

Unfortunately, the higher frequencies only work over short distances due to the laws of physics. This means you have to live within 2km of your local telephone exchange to enjoy the extra speed.

I am on o2 Standard 8Mb legacy package, so guess that explains things.

Not really! I'd still expect you to be on ADSL2+ (G.992.5) but capped by O2 to 8 Meg.

That quote does not tell you much and is rather confused. The bit about phone calls applies to ADSL2+ equally with ADSL. Also up to at least 3 km sees benefits from ADSL2+.

I see no sense in them setting it to ADSL1 TBH. ADSL2 works better on very long lines to the tune of a few hundred k and the user can as you say turn it down to an earlier standard if need be.
