It is possible that engneers think that your area is too far for 80/20, but more likely they just have not been told about the big 80/20 switch on months ago.

Contractors appear a lot less informed than the actual openreach staff, to be expected really.

Hi there, I'm sorry I've not been able to get back to you just yet. I'm reviewing this with a colleague now. I'll make sure we get back to you ASAP with regards to the next engineer visit.

I'm hoping there won't be yet another visit, if the Openreach order has now been "closed off".

OK, so in positive news, I am now able to use the diagnostics section of the BT speedtester, the bit that shows you your ip profile. Previously, this did not work for me - I just got an error message.

OK, so the profile is still wrong, but I am crossing my fingers that this means the BT order has now been closed off by the second engineer, leaving it in Plusnet's hands to arrange the 80/20 speed bump.

Hallelujah! 73.7 down; 15.87 up. Ping latency around 40ms.

I'm not sure if speedtest latency is that meaningful, but subjectively I do think latency seems very up and down. Could this be related to DLM on the line in the first few days after installation? Will investigate further.

That's good news smile.

If you pay a one-off £5 for a Static IP address, (you can do it through your Member Centre), you can set up a thinkbroadband Broadband Quality monitor, like the one in my sig. That can be very useful for diagnosing latency problems. You can also compare it with, (or get it added to), the ones on this Plusnet page, to see if others are getting similar patterns.

Connection - Plusnet UnLim Fibre (FTTC). Sync ~ 54.3/15.4Mbps @ 600m. - BQM

Quick off-topic question, I haven't yet gone for a static IP address but probably should before they all run out! Are there any additional security precautions one should take with a static address?

That depends on how robust the ones you already take are!

Well I'm not obsessive about it. Anti-virus software, occasional malware scans, Windows firewall, whatever firewall is in the router. ShieldsUP! gives me a clean bill of health, apart from the dire warnings on the front page - the bit that starts "The text below might uniquely identify you on the Internet". Of course, with a static IP address, then it will. Not a lot I can do about that AFAIK.
