SuperUser was just a trick in the O2 router firmware to stop "Administrator/admin" level users being able to alter anything important. I haven't come across it anywhere else.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk | Domains,website and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Plusnet UnLim Fibre (FTTC). Sync ~ 53.4/16.8Mbps @ 600m. - BQM

more likely congestion than anything to do with the line.

congestion where, cant say.

If speeds are consistently fast between 3am and midday almost certianly congestion related.

The most closest to off peak tests you did were the after midnight, 2pm ones and they were fast.

BT Infinity 2 Since Dec 2012

Do you notice the Yo-yo speeds in day to day usage? do you do any online gaming?

Some of those speed drops of blfamily's suggest something funny is going on there - you shouldn't be seeing drops to 20Mbps on the unlimited, 80/20 package (which I guess you are on) unless something else is using the connection at the time of the test.

I'm on the Extra Fibre package (haven't got around to changing to unlimited yet), with 80/20 sync speeds.

I have a SamKnows test box monitoring the line, so I have a good idea of what congestion is being seen. That box tests the download speed hourly at peak times of day, and at a few other select times - and is fairly clever in trying to run tests when nothing else is going on on the line.

Here are the average speeds it found during the complete month of May:
Time Average (Mbps)
04:00 72.84
10:00 72.46
16:00 71.56
18:00 71.29
19:00 70.56
20:00 67.57
21:00 72.17
22:00 72.07
23:00 72.59

And here are the actual speeds for the 28th-31st May:
Time May Avg 28th 29th 30th 31st
04:00 72.8 72.9 73.0 73.0 72.8
10:00 72.5 72.9 72.9 72.8 72.9
16:00 71.6 72.1 72.9 72.9 72.7
18:00 71.3 72.3 72.2 72.9 73.0
19:00 70.6 72.6 72.4 72.7 73.0
20:00 67.6 63.9 59.5 67.4 72.9
21:00 72.2 68.1 72.8 71.8 72.6
22:00 72.1 72.8 72.8 72.7 72.9
23:00 72.6 72.8 72.2 72.9 72.9

The only real dips are 8PM (almost always) and 9PM (sometimes).

I agree. Last night was the same, a distinct drop in speed at 8.45 that got even worse betweeen 9 & 10.30pm before recovering just after 11pm. I looked at some ping tests and these were not conclusiive, today have changed DNS to see if that makes any difference.

Hopefully I can get the BBQM working on a dynamic IP. Will see if that shows anything a miss.

PlusNet dynamic IP address is quite volatile! I advise a simple one-off £5 through your Member Centre for a static IP. It's a far better idea smile. Takes effect immediately, applicable on reconnection.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk | Domains,website and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Plusnet UnLim Fibre (FTTC). Sync ~ 53.4/16.8Mbps @ 600m. - BQM

I've seen occasional reference to f8lure that seems to do a similar job to the BQM (also using Firebrick).

I've not tried them, but they apparently do DDNS, if you don't mind using a DDNS agent in either router or PC.

I'd go with the £5 option though...

Another thought on this...

Sometimes the issue is that one of the Plusnet gateways can get unbalanced and overloaded - causing this kind of issue.

If that *is* the cause, then hopping to a new gateway can solve it - which can be done by starting a new PPPoE session - so reconnect at the router (not modem) or just reboot it.

To see what gateway you are on, use the PN Usertools Gateway Checker.

To see what the various statistics say, look at the PN Network Performance and the PN Network Latencies, which display some information for each gateway.

One of the things I was concerned about before joining was the latency for gaming, I can now confirm all is well so far. My latency in gaming dropped by 10ms in fact.

As I was comparing graphs in the BQM thread thought id share my Plusnet graph:

O2 (30/05/13)
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share/f6b9520024c...

Plusnet (01/06/13)

Success? I'm Happy.

That's an extraordinarily low latency. Wow
