DO NOT
In reply to a post by eckiedoo:
plug in a conventional ADSL Splitter
Not necessary when only phone connected and just introduces another possible point of failure.

Unplug everything from your NTE (Network Terminating Equipment socket) ie where the phone line comes in to your house.

You may have to plug in a conventional ADSL Splitter, the dongles needed to prevent the ADSL BB signals getting to individual phones.

Plug in to the Splitter, the "simplest" (probably oldest) directly-corded phone you have or can borrow etc.

Dial 17070

then 2 for the "Quiet Test"; and listen carefully.

I used to instal CCTVand Alarms so used to have to connect to telephone lines and still have my engineers test phone the yellow one will that do? Its got the adaptor for croc clips so could go straight tomain line? if needed? I also used to have a blue BBone but cannot find that one.

If "ancient" enough, probably OK - but remember that the line is BT's up to and including the NTE.

Apparently some cordless phones and their Base Units can in themselves inject "noise", hence not being recommended.
