Re: Recomended Router for Plusnet Fibre?

[re: Elkin] [link to this post]

Last week I installed an ASUS RT-N66U to replace my Plusnet 582n and am pleased with it so far. I don't seem to be losing connection to it from my wireless laptop, which I did several times a day on the 582n.

A big point in its favour is it does simultaneous 2.4GHz and 5GHz. My iPad and Samsung III both pick up the 5GHz once given the SSID for that. I've now fitted an ASUS USB-N53 dongle to the USB3 port on the laptop and get over 53Mbps via 5GHz wireless on speedtests from a 57.4Mbps IP Profile.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk | Domains,website and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Plusnet UnLim Fibre (FTTC). Sync ~ 59.4/14.4Mbps @ 600m. - BQM

Thanks for the response RobertoS. I assume that it's ok with Powerline adapters and capable of streaming and transferring large files over the 'local' network?

Wifi is very important in our household, with umpteen devices connected any any given time. I went for the Netgear WNDR4500.

Has proved to be an excellent choice. Wifi on both 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz is fantastic. The ability to create an isolated 'guest' network is also very handy (no need to give visitors your primary wifi access codes).

No idea about Powerline adapters but can't imagine there would be a problem.

It reckons it can handle 2 x 3 x 150Mbps wireless, and has 4 x 1gig LAN ports plus 2 x USB2 ports. I expect they have something pretty powerful behind the bits of that else the mushroom compound would have hit the fan long ago. WAN is 1gig.

I'm sure I read somewhere but can't immediately find it, that it can do three guest networks. The settings for 1 x 2.4GHz and 1 x 5GHz guests are staring you in the face in the GUI. Ah, just found:-
The RT-N66U supports up to three wireless networks over the 2.4 GHz band and three over the 5 GHz band, so it can protect computers from any unauthorized access, hacking and virus attacks. The parental control allows you to set up your kids' computer access times.
Presumably you give the kids a guest network with timed access. I don't quite get the logic of "... so it can protect ..." tongue.

I'm going to bite the bullet and go grab one on the weekend. Everyone in the house is moaning at me for the slow internet via WiFi (personally I use Powerline, but it'll give me peace and quiet, lol).

The guest network thing sounds pretty useful as well - I'm sure it'll get used a lot over the festive period with friends and family coming over and wanting to update their hashtags, status, or instapics.

If you haven't got InSSIDer I suggest you download it so you can keep track of what channels are in use by surrounding networks. It's free and excellent.

Doesn't show microwaves ovens and suchlike, that one costs money!

Don't have it running when you do any speed tests!
