Hi Chrysalis,

At the time I was downloading there was a BBC iPlayer HD stream and a single HD feed of Netflix. The Usenet slowed from a touch above 7MB/s to slightly over 6MB/s.. it dropped to 4MB/s at one point for 10 seconds but I assumed that was because one of the HD streams was doing catchup or it could of been someone started a Youtube session going. That was peak time too.

But I really need to download more... to be certain smile

ok and it doesnt do with pro addon with normal tcp congestion control?

going from 7 to 6 is reasonable, the 4 to 10 seconds is of more interest tho.

What is this "pro add-on" from PlusNet? I can't see any mention of it during the sign-up stages for their ADSL based packages, at least for the residential based ones?

That's lucky - you might be tempted to blow £5 a month on something that will make your connection worse!

Thanks. So just removes the traffic management and rate limits that may be in place, but doesn't actually allow the line to run at the full down/up speeds that it could possibly connect at (eg: Annex M for uploads)?

It doesn't affect uploads at all as there is no traffic management at Plusnet level as the damage will have been done by the time it reaches their servers
It doesn't affect the ability to run at full download speed but not having the pro option will restrict non priority traffic to allow priority traffic to pull all the bandwidth it needs whereas with it you may find that priority traffic is slowed down

http://usergroup.plus.net/prodcomp1.php allows to compare products. It shows that there are no restrictions on maximum speeds all day, any activity on both Unlimited and with the Pro add on.

If you look at the legacy products such as Extra you will see that speeds were restricted and then adding Pro would make a difference.

Why they ever made the Pro add on available on Unlimited is a mystery. The only reason I can see is that it increases Plusnet's profits by £5 per month while doing nothing for the user and possibly making the experience worse.
