Link got chopped again at around 11pm. Slightly higher Up S/N at 6.6db. Lower Up speed at 650 Kbps. Somewhat louder background noise of cordless. Must check with corded phone at test socket when I have time.

Never test with a cordless phone - because they are digital, it would sound completely silent, so they artificially create noise as a reassurance to the user that its working as they can hear noise.....

You will therefore need to test with directly connected corded phone.

Just to clarify. When you say "snooping' the line", what are you doing?

Was Eclipse Home Option 1, VM 2Mb & O2 Standard
Now Utility Warehouse (up to 16mbps) via Talk Talk

Tam, My cordless is completely silent (other than the dial tone) most of the time. From time to time, I hear background noise. If noise was being purposely generated to reassure the user, I would hear it all of the time.

It was a term that I picked up many years ago and I believe from a BT engineer. By 'snooping' the line I mean the following. If you press the green button (on my phone) you will hear a dial tone and it lasts for 10 seconds before it times out. During that time you can listen to see if you can hear noise. This can be done with a cordless or a corded phone of course.

This thread is getting long and you may have already answered this question earlier but how did you get on using the corded phone and completing the quiet line test i.e. dialling 17070 and taking option 2 ..... and listening patiently smile

Hi Apprentice, I am conscious that this thread has become rather large. Like to thank everyone who has offered advice. We can knock it on the head if it is becoming unwieldy.

When I did the 17070 option 2 test, there was no noise apparent. I will be trying it again.

I have been offered a BT Boost Engineer by PlusNet but I do not know what that entails. By Boost, I assume that the transmitted power will be increased!

I've asked "someone who can tell you" if he can answer, as I'm not sure exactly what they do. Boosting the power definitely isn't.

Hi there Nolly. A Boost visit is the same as an LLU SFI, basically the engineer is tasked to resolve your broadband issue, and the original brief was to 'make the end users experience of broadband as good as possible' shocked.

The big difference is that a Boost visit is up to and including the CP's router, and the engineer should be carrying a spare CP router to replace yours with *if* required.

Hope this helps.

I'd say go for it. I might even have a read through this thread smile
