Re: Internet almost unusable in the evenings

Check the gateway as suggested earlier. (I supplied the link).

Following the reboot, have you still got the problem? It would have been good to know the gateway before the reboot, but that's history.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk | Domains,site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Plusnet UnLim Fibre (FTTC). Sync ~ 58.7/14.6Mbps @ 600m. - BQM

Yes, unfortunately I did not check the gateway before the re-boot - BUT we didn't have any problems at all last night since re-booting !! Maybe it was contention in that gateway after all ? I have not yet raised the ticket to get the SNR changed from 3 to 6 as I think I'll just see how it goes for now.

(Who'd have thought that turning it off and on again would actually fix it smile)

After re-booting yesterday to check the SNR we had absolutely no problems last night with the connection. Another poster suggested that re-booting might select a different gateway which might have less congestion. Maybe it was that and the reboot has put me on a better gateway ?

Re-booting the router does seem to have fixed the problem (well last night was ok) but, for future reference, how do I close the PPP session ? What does DLM mean ?

Thank you

Just reboot or discon and then recon.

DLM = Dynamic Line Management, the system running all the time trying to keep your connection stable and fast.

Disconnect/reconnect via the router interface is far preferred to rebooting which can upset the DLM. Disconnect/reconnect is also much quicker.

Can't see it makes any odds. Both register 1 discon to the DLM. Anyway the odd discon doesn't disturb it.

I prefer to reboot as it zeroises all error counts and sets clock back to 0, making it easier to monitor subsequent performance.

Closing the PPP session is not seen by the DLM. That is only interested in the connection between user modem and the MSAN/DSLAM.

DLM controls the settings for the connection between you and the exchange, on ADSLx, or between you and the cabinet on FTTC. On BT Wholesale or Openreach it starts you off fast, then if there are a lot of errors on the line it sets up interleaving, which enables powerful in-flight error correction, and possibly reduces the connection speed as well. The higher the speed the higher the probability of errors.

Most routers will have a button somewhere in the menus to close/open the (PPP) session. That is the connection between you and your ISP's system/routers. The Plusnet 582n certainly has such a button. It may be labelled Disconnect/Connect. I can't quite remember.

Note which gateway you are on, for future reference.

OK, I hadn't realised that a soft discon would just do that. As I say I prefer to get the error counts in line for my router as it only shows time connected since last (PPP) connect (on the few times I need to reconnect). Actually on this connection I never need to force a PPP reconnect, but just occasionally a resync.
