Re: Plusnet Current Line speed and BT IP Profile (FTTC)

Yes I was making an assumption and I shouldn't have.

And here are the BT and Plusnet portals with current rates

It is a bit odd, but it will be having a negligible effect on your speeds. But you are right, it should be 72.0, not 71.8, I'm sure Plusnet would nudge it up if asked.

I've asked Plusnet to nudge it up for me last week... and I raised a fault ticket for it when it went down to 71.8.

I just want to understand why when Plusnets system tracks BT's profile they appear to show different values.

Very strange. I've no idea how that happened.

It should track, as you say, but the "Max" figure I don't think matters. The tracking isn't exact by the way, it is to the 100kbps below the BT IP Profile, and I thought was set from that not from the raw sync.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk | Domains,site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Plusnet UnLim Fibre (FTTC). Sync ~ 58.7/14.6Mbps @ 600m. - BQM

I had the following reply from Plusnet (slightly abbreviated).

If I'm understanding correctly they're saying that it should have tracked the BT profile but it might not be the same as the BT profile... this week it was only 0.25Mb/s, but last week it was 4Mb/s out! I know it's not a lot and I should just be grateful for the service I get... but if I was with Zen or BT I wouldn't have this system getting in the way! So perhaps I need to consider whether it's worth moving for an extra 4Mb/s smile

Thank you for getting in touch.

Due to the way profiling works you may find that our profiles occasionally are not perfectly reflective of the BT profiles. The BT profile will be quantized whenever a resync event occurs, whereas our profiles will only change when a 'delta report' to be generated. These delta reports are submitted to our systems by the BT line management software, and unless one is received the speeds don't update. They are not generated constantly, and there can be some time between reports- particularly when there are no significant changes to your speeds.

The receipt of a delta report and subsequent change of profiled speed frequently forces a disconnection as well. If your line changed its speed as regularly as the profile was quantized on BT systems not only would it have a massive negative impact on our resources and ability to manage accounts, it would also cause additional service disconnections.

In this instance because the difference between our profiles and the BT profile was so small it did not trigger a change

You should ask someone on plusnet community forum to ask plusnet staff to put your ip profile on 72.0 to match BT IP.

Hi Adslmax,

Thanks for the excellent advice. Plusnet raised the profile to 72Mb soon after my last post. I did a speedtest which is the most stable speedtest I've had for about 6 months.

Mine seems to have fixed on its current value without much change.
"Download speed achieved during the test was - 58.99 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 40 Mbps-69.89 Mbps .
Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is - 69.89 Mbps
"
My Plusnet info:
Estimated line speed:
There's no speed estimate currently held on your account.
Current line speed:
69.8 Mb
"
.
Should it be higher?

No, assuming you mean the Plusnet line speed. If you are talking about the download speed then yes, you should be able to do better, try the test on this site and see what that comes up with.
