Trying to increase fibre speed

I'm trying to see if I can increase the speed of my FTTC line.
Just joined Pusnet from BT, still using BT modem.
My moden is about 4m from the phone connection. I replaced the engineer installed cable (looks a bit ropey) with a pre-terminated cable.
I was getting 32M down /7.2M up,
An hour after connection of the new cable the wholesale tester gave:
"Download speed achieved during the test was - 37.45 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 23.38 Mbps-33.4 Mbps .
Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is - 33.4 Mbps
Upload speed achieved during the test was - 7.29Mbps
Additional Information:

Speedtest.net gives a similar high download reading of 37.6/7.51Mb/s
First thing to note is that I'm getting a higher download speed than the profile. Does this mean that the speed is likely to increase given time?
I don't want to leave it there too long, as it's liable to be tripped over unlike the original cable.

Unlikely.

That higher speed than the profile suggests another theory of mine may be true. Could you have a look in your Plusnet Member Centre please, and see what the Current line speed is in Connection >> High speed broadband?

The Plusnet website says:
"Estimated line speed:
35Mb (Download speed could vary depending on line conditions. Estimates are the maximum speeds that your phone line can support. These speeds are dependent on the package you choose.) - Checked on 2014-08-19 21:12:50

Current line speed:
40 Mb"

Pardon? Which check? Your speed test result earlier with the 37Mbps speed higher than IP Profile is surely on Plusnet?[

Presumably the Estimated Speed - "Checked on 2014-08-19 21:12:50" - not relevant anyway.

Ah, so he perhaps hasn't checked the Current line speed either . And by the time he does it won't be relevant because the BTW IP Profile will have risen.

The current line speed is shown as 40Mb, which I presume is because it's the 40/20 product. What's your theory that would explain why the throughput is higher than the IP profile?

We don't know it is still 40Mbps, as it could have been set correctly since initial setup.

The theory, which I've advanced a few times and appears to be correct, stems from Plusnet Digital Care reps statements at least twice, when we have seen the opposite effect. Low speeds for no apparent reason when both the IP Profile and Current line speed appear correct, following an earlier low sync. (Possibly the Current line speed being low then set higher by the reps).

There is some test they ran that detected "an imbalance in their supplier's system". It seems that the operative IP Profile is held somewhere else and isn't the same database as the one that is reported by the BTW speed test. In other words the reported one is also a copy of the operative one, and can also fail to be updated like the Current line speed.

The BT Wholesale information today is:
" Download speedachieved during the test was - 36.75 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 27.1 Mbps-38.71 Mbps .

The Plusnet information shows:
"Current line speed:38.6 Mb"
Regardless of the BT profile figure going up and the Plusnet line speed figure going down, it does appear that the actual download speed has gone up some 5Mb/s.
I've tucked the temporary lead under the carpet until I can find some spare hours to run it properly.
