I would recommend people use Shields UP periodically, an excellent site, especially for the paranoid laugh

Its fairly basic. Was essential back in 1999 when people didn't have home routers and connected to high speed internet with Windows 9x machines that leaked tons of information.

Mr Gibson @ GRC Is quite good at the old hype though :-/

its ok as a basic test to check for open ports, but his advice is very outdated.

No need to be stealthed as he puts it, and allowing pings does not make you vulnerable.
