Has relay.plus.net gone AWOL?

A friend is unable to send emails because relay.plus.net doesn't exist.

Is this a permanent thing, or just temporary?

BT (poor) -> Zen (excellent) -> O2 (started well, went downhill -> IDNet (No complaints - but 100GB cap) -> Zen (unlimited-and now ipv6!l)

I had a problem on saturday trying to set up a non plusnet email address using relay.plus.net as the smtp. However it worked ok on sunday.

It's there now as it responded to pings a few seconds ago.

Taking that literally, rather than the word-resequenced version I think you intended, I expect most people, particularly those who use ISP or free email, find using a single mail host easier than using many. wink

You haven't explained why you said we should be configuring multiple servers - surely picking one that suits and using that is sufficient?

One reason could be because access to the regular relay.plus.net is blocked by some (foreign) hotels. IME

Always best to use the SMTP that aligns with the email address's domain to increase deliverability. Unless you run your own domain and manage your own SPF and DKIM / DMARC records.
