I think Plusnet at least should be refunding line rental saver pro rata if price hike is reason for leaving.

See here: https://www.theguardian.com/money/2017/feb/22/bt-ref...

If it's the case for BT previously then the same courtesy should extend to other ISPs as it is an Ofcom ruling. Thoughts?

Interesting - hadn't seen that in the news. That should change things - be interesting as to how far it goes, does it mean people could also cancel their BT TV even if the price of it hadn't increased? Presumably they could because they couldn't watch the IP channels without BT Broadband.

Yeah, logically they should be able to cancel without early exit fees if 100% certain that the TV service couldn't work without phone line. If they do get exit fees for the TV services because the phone price is increasing then its effectively being held ransom and forced to pay the extra fees.

On a similar note when I left Virgin 4 months into a 12 month contract because of severe broadband issues, they tried to charge me for early phone line termination fees which I successfully contested as the whole thing (TV, BB, Phone) was purchased as a package.

Hope this Ofcom comment helps a lot of people in a similar situation where they have paid line rental upfront and feel obliged to accept new phone plan price rises.

I am out of my minimum contract, so I can go when ever I want, been looking around anyway, but this price rise, while not a lot is still another £12 a year for nothing extra. Call Protect technology is a waste of time for me as I do not use the phone line, in fact the only phone connected to it is a cheap wired Tandy one I found.

Looking at Now Tv broadband.

If you don't use the phone look at Pulse8 line rental (£13 per month) - I'm using them for the phone line with FTTC from AAISP.

I had to fight for it, but BT let me get a refund of my prepaid LRS when I left due to the April 2017 price rises. Apparently it's a new policy for this year, and therefore most frontline staff aren't aware of it yet (and it'll probably take a while to filter through because it's very much a corner case).

Plusnet should follow suit, otherwise a complaint would probably also sort this out.

It's generally an issue to do with consumer regulations, as they prevent any kind of penalty when leaving a contract due to the seller imposing a detrimental change. Even a non-refund is a penalty, as the relevant rules specifically explain that penalties aren't just limited to literal charges, they can also be the non-refund of prepaid amounts.

It makes sense, since Ofcom rules are supposed to allow leaving contracts without charge when rises are imposed, and not receiving a refund for line rental prepaid isn't fair, considering you had no idea you'd be getting an increase when you bought the prepaid line rental.
