My line will except 3.5mb but i only average 1.5mb

After purchasing sky broadband 16mb i was told my line would only allow me 3.5mb.

Been activated a few days now and my speed i've only been getting on average 1.5mb???

Is this normal or should i be getting more

They shouldn't be telling you what your line can support when you order, because unless they have the line stats its guess work and just an estimate.

You can get the line stats from the router

Its under show statistics you need the downstream Line Attenuation and SNR

With those figures you can make a good estimate of your potential speed (at that time)

Noise Margin 7.8 db 14.0 db

Thats what it came back with.

Will my speed ever increase from that or will that be all i can expect.

Lots of my friends were looking to change to sky but ive already told them not bother.

They are blatant liars and will say anything to so long as you change to them.

Another thing that keeps happening is that the connection keeps going off then coming back on which signs me in/out of msn by the mins, is that normal.

Looks like there is a lot of noise on the line, considering its length. Are you plugged into a long extension by any chance? Have you tried plugging directly into your master phone socket?

It is about a 3 metre line plugged into a filter. It is a second line up in my bedroom could that have something to do with it.

I would test it with the router straight into the wall socket with nothing else attached (Sky box , other lines, extensions ect )

If the line speed is improved then you know it is something on your line causing the noise

and then you can start to diagnose what is causing it.
