How good is the Sky router?

[link to this post]

Hi, im currently with UKOnline LLU (easynet same as SKY) and im a little worried about being locked into using skys router. Im on a long line (63dB attenuation) but with my billion 7402 i am getting a very stable 3000kbps average (i turn off when i go to bed around 1am).

Before i got my Billion 7402 i had a BT 2Wire 2700 which did the same for my line on IP Stream based products but with the Easynet DSLAM i had a very unstable 2200-1700kbps synch. I was thinking of migrating to SKY seeing as i have SKY TV and have heard that the LLU internet is basically the same as UKOnline just cheaper. I would just like to know if the sky router is anygood on preforming on long lines and if it uses the same chipset as the Easynet DSLAM (GSPN - Globespan). If not is there a way to use my current billion router with a Sky Connection?

Thanks in advance.
Greg

Yes, you need to get the generated username and password and put those in your router.

I have a long line,i have tried the v2 sky router against my ST585v6 router and during the day they are both fine, but after 8pm the ST585v6 router holds on to the line far better.

righto, do they make a fuss/care about it? (im sure they can detect whether your using their equipment or not through MAC adressing) or is it similar to the "you have to keep your phoneline connected to the SKY box" rule?

It breaks the terms and conditions as using the supplied router is mandatory. This is part of the sign up that you agree to. But they can't tell, or don't care enough.

You could always clone the Mac address.

My Sky-supplied DG834 was switched on long enough for me to extract the login details, and since then I've only used my own routers. Sky haven't said anything at all. I've kept the DG834 just in case I have line problems and need to call support.

I keep the sky router as a standby in case of problems.

My own personal router supports a lot more features than the one sky provide, some of which I need to use like QoS for outgoing ports and selectable DNS addresses so I don't have to fiddle with all my PC's to correct skys poor DNS server.

If I ever had broadband problems I would swap back to my sky router to help diagnose the problems which is why you should not get rid of it.
