Sky Activation

My broadband service should be going active at some point tomorrow, is it worth plugging the router in first thing and leaving it switched on during the day or just leaving it until the evening and connecting it up then when hopefully the service will be up and running?

I just wondered if there was a time that it was more likely to go active during the day/evening.

You can just plug it in when ever. Then when the service becomes available it should sync. wink

It can go active anytime, mine went active at around 5.30pm in the afternoon. Any ISP before when i was migrating it usually happened in the small hours of the morning.

Cheers for the info, think I'll stick it on before I go to work in the morning then hopefully it will connect up and synch by the time I get home, fingers crossed smile

Well I popped home at lunchtime and it looks like I'm up and running smile

Quickly connected to the router to check out the stats and wondered if anyone could have a look at them and work out roughly what speed I'll be getting once the 10 DLM has finished?

Downstream
Connection speed: 4095 kbps
Line attenuation: 11.5db
Noise Margin: 15.6db

Upstream
Connection speed: 605 kbps
Line attenuation: 7.1db
Noise Margin: 17.8db

Many thanks.

You should get the full 20mb with those stats, my line is 23.5db and with the gaming profile tweaked to 3.5dB i get the full 20.

You should get the full 20 easy.

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 19995 kbps 1014 kbps
Line Attenuation 23.5 db 11.9 db
Noise Margin 3.1 db 10.8 db

That's the stat's i get with the Gaming Profile and the SNR tweaked to 50%

I'm not on the SVBN, on SMPF, think thats why i don't get the higher syncs

That's great news smile They estimated about 18.5 and I'd be more than happy with that, so if I get the full 20 I'll be very impressed, shame it won't help me improve my online gaming, I'll still be just as bad!

Cheers smile

Just tried connecting my Xbox to the router wirelessly and it gets so far then comes back stating that it's moderate, does anyone know how to set this to open? Is there anything I need to do on the router?

BuckleZ, What is preferred. I don't care about pstn, but I've elected to move the rental to Sky also, SVBN.
From what your saying, can I expect to achieve a higher upstream rate on SVBN vs SMPF?
Currently on DSL 8128/832 12/14dB SNRm 20/9dB attenuation.

Cheers smile

I have a friend with the same sort of line as mine Att: 23-25db and i get 1025kbps MAX and he syncs at 1100+ all the time on SVBN.

I'm happy enough keeping it as SMPF as makes changing ISPs easier

Cheers, will leave it for now then smile
Changing ISP isn't too much of a worry as can just Return to Donor, taking a 12 month voice contract, and use my other line while I wait for DSL to activate with new ISP.

I'd imagine it's doubtful that Sky install both a DSLAM and an MSAN in newly activated exchange...surely they use an MSAN even for broadband only?

But, should I rethink and change my mind, is it possible to stop my PSTN going to Sky but keep the broadband order going?

Good good...after it's all up and running I'll give them a call to have them manually profile the line. Is this something that they will do without question or do you have to jump through hoops to talk to someone in tier 2?
Thanks!

I have a VIP account as i worked for Sky bout a year ago, so i called the VIP team and asked them to give me the gaming profile. It was done pretty easily and without any question.

I have hard of it being difficult to get Tier 1 to listen to you and passed you through to CRT

It's not that much of a problem then if Tier 1 pass you through to customer relations?
Are they happy to manually set-up the line at this point? The margin on my line barely fluctuates so I should be able to receive near the max, especially with the right modem wink Got a DG834v4 with DGTeam already.

It was no problem for my mate who just rang up and asked for the gaming profile. They just did it.

My Mothers Sky BB was activated in the middle of the day - she was shocked when she picked up the phone to make a call and a voice immediately said he was working on the line and to leave it a few minutes while it was done!
