2nd phone line help needed

Hi this isnt technically about sky broadband as such but at the moment im on sky LLU phone/broadband but im wanting to switch to ask4 FTTC in September but they require a BT phone line.

Ive heard sky are horrendous and make in near impossible to transfer your number away from them back to BT.

So what i was thinking was having a second phone line fitted by BT with a new number and using the BT line for FTTC and dedicated fax line. And Keep the sky line for calls and downgrade to the free broadband and use that as a backup. (keeping the phone number is well worth paying the extra 11 quid to sky and being safe in knowing its kept)

How would I / They go about this i presume i ring bt and tell them i want to join but will need second line because of sky but will they need to fit a second wire to the house or is it down the same wire but a second NTE.

forgot to mention that the FTTC with ask4 is via the digital region network not anyting to do with BT FTTC if that makes a difference at all.

You don't need to tell BT why you want a second line. Your existing drop cable might have the necessary extra wires required for another line or they will add another cable.

thanks for the reply much helped it may not come down to it in the end it depends how picky sky want to be when leaving but the number is very important to keep so would be worth it at a last resort.

If your line was originally a BT line then you can have BT take over your line without a number change provided you are not moving address. It would also help if you were out of your contract period with Sky. Your phone service should only be down for an hour or so on transfer day but you may have no broadband for a couple of weeks.

Hi its never been with BT we moved in 16 year ago had BT for the first year but my mum despises them so as soon as Cable was laid in the area she jumped ship. Then about 6 year ago we had it cut off for 6 months. Then signed back up and got the number we've got now. Then switched to sky 6 months ago and took the number with us so basically it was originally a Telewest cable phone number.

In September will of been with sky 8 month but they told me i can pay the remainder of my contract off any time if i want to get out of the remainder of 12 months.

Like i said originally sky have been good so far but i didn't realise how much we relied on the extra speed we had with cable till we didn't have it. So want to switch to FTTC and get it back weve got a lot of internet enabled devices in the house and when there all trying to access the net it bogs down lol.

If sky got off there buts and started offering FTTC id stay put but there not so need to find some way of sorting it all out without losting the number lol

I think it's best to check with BT if you can keep this number otherwise a second line is your only option. That will mean two line rentals plus your broadband charges.

Yea i did email BT a few week ago about taking the number to them it took 8 days to get back and all i got was shouldn't be a problem but well let you know if its no possible before your order is placed. So wasn't exactly precise lol but best bet is to just ring up and ask about it if its not possible then second line it will have to be, if it is then all good lol. if i do end up having to have 2 lines ill keep the sky as our phone line and use the BT one as a fax and broadband line.
