Using my own router - FTTC

Hi,

I've ordered Sky Fibre for my home service. I'm currently on ADSL with a different provider.

I have a linux server that I use for my routing currently connected to an ADSL router in bridge mode so my Linux server does the PPP connection for me.

Can I replicate this on the Sky Fibre? I don't yet know what equipment I'll be receiving from Sky to install, but is there any way of doing this? I thought it would be simple with the VDSL openreach modem. Didn't realise that it appears they've stopped using it now..

You will get a Sky Hub SR102 that is fairly locked down, not sure on the ability to get the username/password back out of these currently to let you use your own hardware.

Apparently the calculator at http://www.ph-mb.com/products/sky-calc works with the SR102 if you select Sagem.

Success connecting any standard router to Sky through a VDSL modem I guess.

I can certainly get my linux router to issue a DHCP request with specifc options. Can get it to mimic the MAC address of the Sky hub too.

Looks like I'll need to get myself a VDSL modem from somewhere.

Yes, if you're familiar with TCP/IP sniffing, then people have used (and documented) using Wireshark to extract the userid and password pair from the DHCP request packet on a SR101/SR102 router. Once captured you just need to configure your dhcpcd to send these in the request. MAC address of the router is ignored.

Note the pipe symbol between username & password

MAC address cloning not required.

Thanks for all your input guys. Looks like I'll be able to make this work. I'll get my sky box in the next day or 2 and it'll be another few days until my service goes live so I'll have some time to get my sniff on

Which is the better modem? The HG612 or the ECI? They're both around the same price on ebay and the ECI ones tend to say New 2015 model etc.
